Either strip and replace both sides or do what i did and get a rear disc conversion.

has your car been lowered? if so it may be the rear brake compensators(think that's what the thing is called) need adjusting. basically it's there to vary the brake force depending on what weight you are carrying, so if it's been lowered then it thinks the car
is carrying more weight. may have been adjusted by somebody not quite right.might be completely wrong but worth a look i suppose.

honestly can't think of anything else it could be. i think the brakes are diagonally split on
the escort, so that if one circuit fails you still have the other. ( front left+rear right and front right + rear left.) so if it was a fault surely it would affect the fronts in some way
for it to be both rears i can only think of the compensator, might be seized or summat? try adjusting it if you can. and with the konis, if they are adjustables then you can drop it to whatever you like

If you have your vehicle jacked up under the body with the rear wheels hanging down then the brakes on the rear will not work! The compensators are stoping the fluid flow to the rear brakes.

Jack the wheel up with the jack under the suspension arm and see if the brakes work then.

I had the same problem with my brakes. Found the compensators on the back to be seized. Ford don't sell them anymore so I've bypassed them and taken them off. I've also taken the ABS off as all that was seized too. Looking into a bias valve so I can alter the braking on the back.

Cheers
Dave
