Default safely adjusting boost?

Well since fitting my boost gauge on sat, It says im running at 16psi, car has a bleed valve under bonnet, fitted by a previous owner.

Question is, I know when turning up the boost it is best to have it done and set up properly, but what about turning it down??

Can I safely just turn it down a tad without anything else having to be tinkered with??

Turned it down 2 twists, took it for a spin and it was boosting at 8/9psi, my god it felt like id left th engine at home!!, turned it back up a twist and now its running at 12psi, still feels a hell of alot diffrent to when it was at 16, i didnt think id be able to notice it that much!!

Before anyone asks why id want to turn it down, its because i have recently bought the car, and although it has a folder full of history, there is nothing to say it has been set up correctly etc, so until i get it on the rollers and set up by a pro who confirms it can run higher boost safely, im not taking any chances, call me paranoid ha ha

what I found strange was its had loads engine work/mods and has a standard intercooler, thought that would been one of the first things to be changed

No it may have been running lean at 16psi (and on std cooler you may have had a high ACT so at 12 it may be spot on and cooooler.
