Squeaky noise coming from wheel! :-(

Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone has had this happen to them...
Went out for a quick blast tonight, and out of nowhere my car has developed a squeak.
It's coming from the drivers side front wheel, and can be heard at low speeds, and the
squeak gets quicker as the car gets faster, but then you can't hear it.
You can also hear it rocking the car back and forth without the engine running (not
in gear)... It can only be described as an old door opening up-that kind of squeak!
Will get the wheel off tomorrow and have a look, any ideas/suggestions would be 8)
I know noises are the hardest thing to diagnose (especially without hearing it)
but just thought I'd ask on here first!

are you running cossie brakes on the front mate i had a similar prob with mine where the disk was very close to the caliper and rubbing slightly when first converted best to have a good look round when the wheels off

Could possibly be a worn wheel bearing, best way to test for this is to jack the drivers side front wheel free of the ground, place a hand top and bottom of the wheel. Push the top away from you and pull the bottom toward you. If you get any movement, it likely the wheel bearings are worn. It could also be a brake cylinder seized, as I had a car come in a few weeks ago with a similar problem, caused the pad to always be in contact with the disc. Best to get that checked out at a garage. All the best, Chris

cheers lads for the help.
Had the wheel off today and when I jacked the car up and turned the wheel, the squeak could be heard, so Im guessing it wouldn't be the wheel bearing, no crumble type of noise, and no up and down play.
Could it be more to do with the brakes?

okay, a little more progress. The noise is coming from the driveshaft (hub end, not gearbox end)
Does anyone know why this would be, its not a grinding noise, just a squeak! I can live with most things
but pulling up to a junction and pulling away with what sounds like an old creaking door being opened isn't
one of lifes pleasures!
Its not the rubber gaiter that is squeaking, it sounds more like the other side of the gaiter
(where the shaft goes into the hub)

cheers, I don't think its disk though, as its only a few months old. So take the jubilee clip off and pull the rubber back. Does the drive shaft need to come out of the hub end?

Yes it could be a warped disc, even if it has recently been replaced. IIRC new discs have to be worn in gently (ie no heavy braking!!) otherwise the heat buildup can warp them. Try turning that wheel by hand when its off the ground, and see/feel if it binds in a certain place?

Hi all, cheers for the help again.
Had the caliper off today and the noise can still be heard. Took the rubber gaiter off and there was grease inside, put some more in, and its still squeaking!!! :-(
Could it still be the disk if I took the caliper off? It sounds like it is coming from the other side of the disk (inside wheel arch where driveshaft goes into hub)
Could it be the driveshaft has given up - do they normally squeak when they've had it???

check the cv joint at the wheel end of the drive shaft i had this problem and it was the thread where the retaining nut bolt goes it had actually split in 2.
