Boost Problems (Please Help lol)
Hi All
Ok first thing i would like to know is what the car does when the ecu detects too much boost, every turbo car i have owned previously cuts the engine out like a rev limiter does but my rs just makes a funny noise and holds back.Is this normal? and second problem is when i welly it in second it cuts out at about 0.8 bar (roughly 11 psi i think?) but in any other gear it will allow me to boost just over 1 bar (except when i drop down a gear). i do have a chipped ecu on the vehicle but dont know how much boost its supposed to allow,
i have also tried a friends ecu which is supposedly unlimited boost, but had the same problem.
other than this the car runs fine and starts fine so im stumped.

If you hit the boost limit it will cut the ignition but if you have a chipped ECU then i cant see that being your problem When you say it makes a funny noise like what????

Its hard to say really, it sort of sounds like its misfiring but its not if you know what i mean, basically when it boosts up it will hit about 4000rpm then it will hold back but not cut out. every other turbo car ive owned cuts out quite sharp,like the rev limiter on my rs but this doesnt cut out it just burbles and will sit at about 4000rpm,if you lift off a bit and are gentle with the throttle it will rev right out but like i said it only does it in 2nd gear or when you drop down a gear sometimes.

also quickly,surely if it was the boost limiter it would cut off at the same pressure in every gear all the time? sometimes i can boost quite and other times,no more than about 11 psi. also done the same thing when i tried my mates ecu.

I HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH MINE, SOUNDS LIKE ITS PINKING AND HOLDS BACK. AFTER I CHANGED THE ACTUATOR IT CURED IT. AS FOR CHIPS THE MAIN PURPOSE IS TO REMOVE THE BOOST LIMIT.

ok thanks, i have had a look and the amal valve has been removed. i am trying to get it on the rollers this week to get it set up again. it is definately like its holding back rather than cutting out, it boosts really hard in 1st,cuts out at about 0.8 bar in 2nd and boosts to just over 1 bar in 3rd,4th and 5th but doesnt seem to pull very well.

ok mate, will do. hopefully i will be able to get it on the rollers at my mates garage this week. if we find the problem i will let you all know as soon as.

ok another question lol, my ecu is chipped by superchip and i was wondering if anyone out there has one and would be able to tell me how much boost they normally let you run, i was told it was unlimited but would like to make sure. im starting to get a headache over this,im quite happy poodling around but its annoying knowing that theres something wrong. mine had a similar problem when i would try and cruise along in 5th and try and accelarate it would get to bout 90 then struggle and to get past it and the boost would drop to bout 4psi, i could get over 90 if i took it past in 4th then change gear but the boost always dropped off, my ecu isn't chipped, it has only been remapped, not to worry now tho the oil pump failed and bottom end went so doin a full rebuild slowly, but would like to know what you find out

ok car is now sorted and running fine basically i was told it was underfuelling and bogging out when it tried boosting above 12psi. we managed to get it up to 1 bar then it had same problem but this time we checked it, it was still fuelling ok? checked everything we could think of and found nothing. turns out it was a plug breaking down so i bought a new set of plugs and it runs fine now and happily boosts up to 17-18 psi and is running 194 bhp so im well happy. i am a bit annoyed though as i had it set up about 4 months ago buy another local tuner and was told i couldnt get any more than about 165 bhp because it wouldnt allow enough fuel.bollocks.

i spoke to my mate today and told him your problem, he wants to know what chip it is as he says hearts,spades and # is the ecu type and doesnt
tell you what chip has actually been fitted inside, he says that alot of chips available have the boost limit set at 15 psi so that may be the case with yours.get back to me if you can,ive been a mechanic for 7 years and ive been working on my rs for about 5 years but my mate really knows his stuff, ile try and get him to sign up lol.
