Ok, tonight, was out for a blast with a mate, all well, chuffed with the car, however...

Stopped at a set of lights, the engine was getting a bit hot, steam started gushing from the vents So bailed out, had a look, water was seeping out from the hose, highlighed below. Topped it up, and off i went, checked it a bit later, and same thing, loosing water through this hose.

Got home, in the dark and had a look, and pressure was being released from a small, pin sized hole above where this hose enters, with alot of moisture below.

Questions;

1. Where does this hose go?
2. Should there be a hole above it?
3. Likely cause?
4. How to go about sorting it?

their shouldnt be a hole above it, the hose goes to the heater matrix, is the hole on the hose or the thermo housing? if you need a new thermostat housing, I have a spare from an XR2 if it is the same as an RST one.

Porbably will need one then dave.

Will get a look at it, hooefully today, and see what the story is.

The hole is a tiny thing, on the housing, pin sized, only noticed as water was bubbling out of it.

Will have a gander asap then get back to you bud.

You 'might' get a way with that metal stuff you get in a tube that hardens...as a short term fix atleast anyway!

The connections on the thermostat housing are galvanzied steel they always rot away, you'd be best getting another thermostat housing.

ANY CVH thermostat housing will work.

Oh and its a piece of piss to fit, 3 x 10mm bolts and 2 hose clips

might need a new housing gasket and some liquid gasket sealant aswell.

Those clips are a PROPER cunt to get in, ESPECIALLY when you don't have a vice.

Right, nipped round the scrappers earlier and absolutely with NO luck at all, spotted a CVH in an M plate escort, however it wasn't the same as the one in my engine? So i decided to head down to Halfords and purchased some LeakFix, came in two tubes, a solution and a hardener and claimed to be proper durable, able to be sanded, drilled, polished once hardened

Mixed it up appropriately, cleaned the surface with a brillo pad and applied. Let it set and it seems ** to be working fine

Will keep an eye on it anyway.

The housings changed in 1990 but the majority of 90 spec cars ive seen still have the older variants on them, no physical difference in them though.

Worst comes to worst ive probably got a spare one i can sort you out with.

If you do change it, get yourself a new thermostat. Only about Ł3 or Ł4 from Ford. After years of use/age the temp they open at (allowing water into the radiator to cool) increases leading t opotential overheating before the therm opens. If you take the housing off then it's worthwhile for a few quid replacing that whilst you're at it.

Plus, what does he know, he thinks its hard to put a silly lil clip that takes 2 seconds with a screwdriver and u need a vice


p.s. is it ok to run without a thermostat? car runs much cooler... (not that it has any need too but just for talking sake)

I'd beg to differ there, every CVH ive driven with an old thermostat takes forever-and-a-fucking day to warm up on those cold winter mornings

Ive got a new one to fit....

Reason I ask....

got car, fan switch no worky...fit new one all is well, car runs cool...

new fan switch no worky, think it must be thermo, so take apart, no thermo fitted...so must be fan switch, didnt have one so fitted back with no thermo so I could drive meantime as if i fitted thermo it would heat up more so jus need to get new fan switch and i'll fit both.

Get an in-car fan over-ride switch fitted mate. That way you can control when you're happy with the fan on or not.

If you've got no stat im not surprised the fan doesnt cut in.

Should be a priority to get that stat in there though, highly unadvisable to drive the car round with no form of restriction in the stat housing.

I'd bung the stat in first, if that switch in there is already new i'd bet my money it'll be fine, save fitting your nice new one if its not needed

For what its worth aswell you want to put a fan bypass in you've only got to run 1 wire into the car.

Then fan switch is new but couple of years old, but only donw 300 or so miles...

The cut on my hand is small in length but big in depth dont bang your thumb knuckle on razor blades children

The fan switch was coming on and off before, I noticed one day it decided not to come on at all, bridged it and it works and checked the fuse so its gotta be the switch as car jus gets hotter an fan doesnt come on now.

what wire do I run a wire from & into the car Andy?

Find the wire between the fan and the switch, and run a wire from that.

It has to be switched to earth.

The plug on this particular switch is notorious for corrosion, I'd put a shilling on the side that if you clean the contacts on the plug with a
small file then Robert would be your mothers brother.

Indeed they are, not on a 2 year old switch tho, if it was the factory fitted 20+ year old item then id have to agree with you

SafeChav, Cheers Andy, sounds pretty easy...will maybe stick one on. fitted new thermo and fan switch, didnt get a chance to check it though as had a petrol leak from the shitty fibre washers I got supplied with the new pump, cars abandonded at my pals going to go get some new copper washers soon and hopefully that'll do the job!!!
think I need bigger ones as I fitted a braided line from the pump, fingero's crossed or its getting torched
