Default Muppet time petrol pump querry!! (Pic request)

Hello all,

Bassically my fuel gage isn't working - but the car is still running fine!!

My guess is that the fuel pump connections have broken/corroded on the actual pump!! Now here is the question - can someone please tell me where my fuel pump is (a pic would be good) and which terminals each colour wire goes to please??

Hope it is this otherwise my dash is coming apart

Cheers,

Dumpy

Should also ask it is a S1 engine in a S2 shell!!

The fuel gauge has nothing to do with the pump if your gauge aint working then it's either the gauge in the dash is fucked or the sender in the tank

Id try changing the gauge in the dash first mate because if the sender is gone then that means you need to drop the tank

Suerly if it is showing empty when the tester is in the car and still running it will show some cause for concern - hopefully i am wrong!!

I thought that if it shows below the limit it would fail!!

I hope i am wrong on this however!!

Easiest way to tell on the engine is if it has a big EFI stamped onto the big metal bit at the top of the engine as you look at it.

Dumpy no need to appologise mate, i just meant it was getting a bit outor proportion for something that is more than likely an easy fix

Now.....if you pull the rear seat bench forward, i THINK there is a multiplug just before the loom goes through the grommet in the bodywork.

Can you just have a quick look and see if there is before i carry on

Sorry to interupt your flirting gents

I have taken the bench up took a photo on my phone and forgot my cable to get it on the PC

But looking at it there is a black plastic connector with a yellow and red wire into it!!

Looking at the engine i did not see any writting on it saying EFI but i have a photo here; i think MFI;

http://s93.photobucket.com/albums/l58/dumpy_01/rst/

Hopefully it will work!!

antony215 Agree..and agree
Live with it if you can Dumpy...unless the tank itself is rotten/rotting then replace both at the same time.

The sender is a small float(more or less) that sit's inside the tank it send's a signal to the gauge to let you know how much fuel is in the tank. To get to the sender you need to drop the tank.

So is there a multiplug under there?

Nah that surplus plug is for a fuel computer (thought the drawing was quite good actually )

Thinking about it i dont think the mk4's do have the plug being as the sender is top mounted.

What your locking for is a Brown/Black wire....can you see it?

Spot the deliberate mistake if i cant use my eyes numb nuts.

The reason i ask again is because he says theres a yellow wire under there?! Never will there be a yellow wire, if that plug is what i think, they will be Brown, and Brown/Red so ave that PROFESSOIR ANTONY

Appologies where its due, that wasn't even you that said that Antony

Damn you TwinkleTwinkleLittleStar

That is the plug though yes, and thats for a fuel computer. And no there isn't the plug i was hoping for

Basically the test you want to do, is bridge the Brown/Black wire to earth, and the gauge should read a full tank, if it does, the sender is probably gone, if not, its probably the gauge

See pic below for tank diagram
The sender is number 10/11/12 and has a float attached at the bottom which goes up & down with the fuel level. This movement is turned into an electrical signal..which is fed to your fuel gauge.

They are easy enough to change: but you have to remove the petrol tank as it fits into the top...hence why I said if you are happy to run with it like that then leave it unless your tank is rusty and needs replacing aswell. Do both jobs in one go to save messing around and labour costs. New tanks are around Ł60-70 ish. Senders guessing around the same: but not sure if you can buy new items: might have to be 2nd hand. If you do change the tank/sender, then get the brake lines checked along that side of the car: they run along the top of the tank and it's a tank-out job to replace them if they need doing. Get them done at the same time also

BUT

Ensure it is not an ELECTRICAL fault first..as Safechav is trying to establish..as you don't want to be changing the sender if it isn't faulty.

SafeChav think you still need a pair of these

I know what other plug your on about (i think) sort of like the one above but it's for the fuel gauge. I couldn't see one on mine and i did feel under the carpet (as far as i could get my hand without taking the backseat/carpet out ) so you may be right they might not have them MFI anyway unless it's farther along the loom(but i wasn't going to take my back seat out to look ) or it may only be the EFI escorts as i swear my old XR3I and ORION (EFI) both had the plug you on about

antony215 that was good of your mrs to let you post the picture up Say hi to her from Andy (Last weekend oh yeaaaaaaaa)

The plug i wasn't too sure about, i thought it might not have it being as the sender is top mounted, on the MK3's you can unplug it all and its a short loom, a nice feature IMO. Its been a while since ive had a MK4

rs shawn well now you mention it the description was a bit boring and long winded but i didnt want to hurt your feelings
