Default S1 air leak..UPDATE.26/1

some of you might remember last month my car was running bad after being taken to the garage....£80 later it was sorted.

WELL.......

MOT last week it came back the same....idleing bad, and if you touched the accelerator it would do the same...putting constant, lack of power ect...like a spark lead had come lose.

Back to the garge Monday and collected Monday afternoon. He said it was a air leak and said...

"Ive fixed it for now, it was a air leak, its fixed till the next time"

didnt ask him where the leak was as i had to get my daughter from school....the cars bill is in the post so dont know the price damage yet.

Tonight i thought better get some petrol as ive booked the car for a rolling tune....and yep its F**ked again. Started it and its stuttering as soon as you hit the pedal.

Ive forked £275 on the MOT and last month i forked £200 on bits and £80 on getting this problem sorted. he changed the spark plugs and leads which fixed it then. Now the other boss said its a Air leak.

I am skint and have my tax this month.....ive looked over the engine yesterday afternoonand my boost pipe ect are secure, everything looks how it should be.

Any ideas where a air leak or block would be??? this has happened twice now......could rain be getting in a pipe somewhere?? my car is on a slope, front end on the down slope.

anyone???

Right mate, unbolt your brake servo vacuum pipe from the inlet and block the hole whatever way you can, you might be lucky and find a bolt that fits the thread, and see if it runs then..............

Take it back to the garage and tell them to fix it if it was running fine when it went in then it's some thing they've fucked about with

also check the 3 pipes from the amal valve as the one that routes into the a/f meter pops out time to time
check the vacum pipe that leads to the ecu as this catchs the heater box and creates a small hole init
also my throttle body had a small air leak to by the switch
are you still running the standard breather as these tend to leak around the breather itself and by the gearbox
is the dipstick pushed in nice and tight

everything in the engine is standard.

I'll check everything youve said in a moment. Quickly find a torch.

Got the car last FEB, only problem i had was the fuel pressure regulator went. Got another...prob sorted.
Never a problem since until last month when the steering rack was changed....I picked the car up and it ran like this, so this is the 3rd time.

also check the 3 wires on the aux valve as my one had come off and it hunted and putted and so on until i fixed it also check the 2 hard plastic pipes on the aux valve as the rubber tends to perish letting it go all loose

ok...60mph winds but i braved it and checked my pipes ect, no splits or anything, servo pipe fine.

But

noticed my metering head is making a bit of noise..louder than usual and the inlet manifold is loud....like hissing.

neither used to be loud, all you could hear was the engine purring.

any ideas?

No not the pipe mate

I said to disconnect the servo pipe and block the hole in the inlet manifold. The servos are very common to develop leaks

overlooked by many people

You mean pull off hose from inlet mainfold, and block hole on inlet mainfold. and if then engine work OK there is air leak.

ok...safechav i checked the servo, undone the pipe ect...was ok.
anyhoo about 11am got pissed of and drove to the garage

(in my missis car, green seat covers and pink airfreshners everywhere humiliating)

spoke to the mechanic, i asked what he found when he fixed it monday as i'll get the bits and fix it.

His reply was that it was a small hole in one of the back pipes

came home then wonderd......November when this first started the same garage changed some bits...i'll show the thread you can see what they did 1st of all...leading to the problem.................
https://passionford.com/forum/viewto...140&highlight=

i picked the car up and it had the problem its suffering from now.
But nothing since it went for the steerng rack and track ends to be changed.

Do you reckon they have split the pipe when they changed the rack???

also had a look at my pipes and cant see nothing going on.
They said to drop it in Monday...but...dreading something else going tits up.

Personally..........yea i do

Find the pipe that has a crack, and if its anywhere near the rack, get on their cases.

All sounds VERY suspect to me.

hence the reason i refuse to take my car to garages, i wont even leave it unattended for an MOT................

Find the leak mate.

Just disconnect everything from the engine you can, disconnect the breather system and all until the fault dissapears and then you will find where the airs leaking in! (remembering to blank off holes as you disconnect stuff obvio )

kurdt5, seriously, this garage sound like they are dicking you around something rotten.

For one thing, if the flapo wasnt moving properly, it would affect ALL cylinders. From the things you pass back id say they havent really got a clue whats up with it

Any metering head will do you, they are all the same, just the base is different on a S1.

just been offered a s1 metering unit of a running car for £75 posted.

suppose i will have to give it a go.

if it dont work im screwed. Only decent garage here is owned by a bloke who has all the old RS's cars, won compitions ect. has a Rs2000 aT THE MOMENT AND IS RESTORING A S1 FOR SOME BLOKE.

BUT....Took my s2 down for a starter motor change and the fooker set the engine on fire.

lost my filter, boost pipe, bumper and burned my left wing inside.....so im not really wanting to go there but he nows his shit.

catch 22........dorset sucks for garages...honest!

Just to check everything is fine with your engine, Why not do a Compression Test? Little tip as well, Disable the fuel pump while doing the test as you will flood the bore's with fuel, and cause bore wash when you do fire it up.

As for the compression test, do the test and see if the readings are all close to each other, and not way out.

if you disconnect the dizzy multi plug it will stop it firing and also the fuel pump from running
