Picked the S2 up yesterday and all seemed well (apart from find out I really need 2 new tyres .. but thats another post)

The car was already running when I picked it up and I drove it up and down the road to check the shortshift was good

Went to start it about 2 hours later and it was knocking on idle, I dabbed the throttle a little and it got louder ... after a few mins it stopped and was well, it drove as usuall.
Went to start this morning (outside temperature was about 3 degrees here) and the same thing happened ... it was knocking. Dabbed the throttle again, and as the revs went down the knocking disappeared. So I started to turn around and the knocking came back, but not as loud. I carried on driving to see if it carried on, and soon enough it stopped and the car was fine.

It's knocked before when cold starting, but not for as long as this time, and it only lasted about 3 seconds (I guess).

I don't think the knocking starts straight away from start (the car starts no problem), its a couple of seconds after.

Any ideas ?

Do you know what oil's in it? If the oil's too thin it could take a while for it to work its way to the top?

Could be a tappet due to the oil running out of it and it takes a min or so to fill back up.

Spoke to a mate who did the service, and he said the same ... it just takes a while for the oil to circulate, and the noise is the tappets. He has yet to hear anythign majorly wrong with the engine/car.

I guess the cold weather doesnt make the tappeting noise any quieter (aparently it was way below 0 last night, and my car is parked on a drive over night semi-exposed to cross wind).

Come to think of it, I remember an AA bloke saying it takes a while for the oil to reach the top ... would being cold make the oil more dense therefore harder to move ?

I'd be tempted to run it on 15-50 oil as the CVH engines seem to prefer oil a little bit thicker. My personal opnion that is. :D

I was running 0-40 ... but a few of the RS members were told to run 5-40 or 10-40 I think on thier cossies.

There's 5-40 in there at the moment (from the oil change yesterday)

I thought 0-40 was good enough for the S2 ?

There seems to be alot of different views on what oil to use. I prefer 15-50 but I make sure I warm the engine up properly before setting off on a morning. I've run 10-40 before and my engine seem to run much more noisey.

davidnormanuk - I let the car idle for bout 30-45 seconds when starting from cold.

Would letting it warm up change what oil to use ?


Not sure if another problem I've had relates to this (I've posted on multiple forums before about it), but sometimes when going uphill in a high gear at low revs there's a tappety sound, but also smoke appears from the exhaust (I've only noticed the smoke once, as each time I hear the noise I let off the gas)

Due to the oil I use being 15-50 it is therefore thicker from cold so I let the engine warm up before setting off so I know the oils getting to where it should and doing its job.

That sounds to me as thought oil you're using is too thin but if you are getting a tapping noise when going up hill I'd say the damage has already been done, especially if you are getting smoke aswell. The best thing to invest in is an oil pressure gauge as that will show any problems oil wise a long time before the light on the dash will.

0-40 is far too thin for a CVH engine bin it and get some 15-50 fully synthetic ASAP. It is expensive to buy but alot cheaper than engine parts.

As far as I know the higher the first number the thicker the oil is when cold. the best to ask is someone called Oilman on here.

I use Fuchs Silkolene Pro-S 10w50 from Opie oils (advertised in banners at the top of PF) and it got rid of virtually all the tapping from my engine! It's a bit pricey but good shit

0-40W isn't too thin for winter use. Remember, that all oils are actually far thicker than we would like when cold.

I have forged pistons, which slap when cold. I have recently tried some 10W50 Silkolene Pro S, and have found it a little rattly about 2 mins after start till it gets warm. A number of people have said the same. I may try thr 15W 60, but not in winter. Quietest oil i've tried is Millers CFS 10W60.

just been reading the thread and i use the millers mentioned above and have no problems at all. i've also got a oil temp guage and oil pressure guage and even in traffic jams both guages stay where they should and when cold no noises at all and pressure shoots straight up to the 90 region dropping to the 35 region when sitting in traffic.
