Default Heaters not working very well

Had a problem with the heaters in my series 2 since i got it, but havent really used it through winter much until now. The air coming out the vents only gets slightly warm, ive just had a new rad installed and had the heater matrix flushed out cos apparently they block up sometimes? This hasn't solved the problem tho. To make it more strange, i seem to get warm air out the drivers and passenger side vents but only freezing cold out the centre!?
It's still not enough to warm the car up properly though. Does this just sound like a new heater matrix needed? and how big a job is that?

Cheers

check the two pipes going into the matrix, one of the pipes will be colder if the matrix is fucked,
