Default What would cause this?

SOMETIMES I get a nasty vibration through the steering wheel when I brake. You can brake hard or gently, it is completely random. Now I'm thinking it is a knackered bush somewhere on the front end. I don't think it is warped discs, and I do hope that it isn't warped discs lol. APT hope that it is otherwise it's more bushes for them to fit.

Any ideas?

Tone, remind me what pads you have?? I would say they are either glazed or they are too hard and you brake like a girl.

DS2500's...

The bloke that fitted the new bits to the back on Saturday reckons it is a bush, or suspension related. Something I want you guys to do when it comes back to you is have the front calipers taken apart and cleaned up as it has clocked up a few miles now.

You think there could be some shit in the calipers?

That way you will learn things as you go along - so saves posting threads on a BB

My guess is a warped disc

Is it one side or both ?

Tone, it's just the same as mine does. Try de-glazing the pads. Easiest and cheapest option, see if that makes a difference.

I still reckon you should try some standard compound pads for the road. Not sure how much you could pick a set up for, but got to be worth a go. You might be pleasantly surprised. Remember that 330mm discs and 4-pots are WAY overkill for a sub 1000kg car, so there is no need for lairy pads.

Fit standard pads, then if you can make them fade, try going just one step up.

Jack the car up, press the pedal get out then spin the wheel.

If you get a catch, no catch noise, repeated during the spin bin the disc. They are almost impossible to recover once warped

Tone, it is possible to DTI a brake disc. You attach a very accurate measuring device to a fixed point on the car, then place the 'probe' on the disc, then you spin the disc and it will tell you how far the disc runs out, it is incredibly accurate. We can do this.

As you know, the AP rotors are over £200 each, so fingers crossed its not that. Also, I'm not sure if I would replace them individually either.

I will see what I can find out regarding the pads. Can you remember the caliper number? Or failing that the part number of any of the pads you have had in the past for them?

Thanks Tone, if I get a chance this weekend I'll give it a whirl. Whirl... Get it?

Mr C - I have never bough pads for the calipers yet, they are 5200's. I wouldn't be too keen on replacing one side either, so £400 for a some discs?

Nice

Thats why doing some simple tests first helps

Hope its something easy cheap/simple, but remember you will have to change those discs/pads someday TT so start saving up

Big brakes always look fine until they need replacing
