As a general rule........if the cam is knackered it will be audibly evident.

I personally on all the CVH's ive had, have never known a worn cam to be quiet, although i have heard people saying they have removed worn cams that are quiet but that isn't first hand experience.

It is common however for people tp put very thick oil in to disguise the noise (which it does) but im guessing youve had it for a while and it would therefore have the correct oil in it

If its excessively worn, ie the lobes really worn flat, it would lack power as the valve's wont be opening fully. If your gonna change it, change everything, cam, rockers, lifters, etc, but.. also check the head isn't worn as well as they do wear on CVH's, which would ruin all your new kit.

A CVH cam wears from the moment it first starts turning. The top ends are very poor. The hydraulic lifters allow for a certain amout of wear as they obviously adjust to soak up clearance and can only go so far, but that is usually fractional and shouldnt cause such severe running problems.

As soon as the cam wears past this tolerance you will hear tapping although it could still be fairly quiet.

To summarise: There is no such thing as a CVH without a worn cam, its just HOW MUCH it is worn.......

And there is someone that has experienced it for you

However.....im sure there would of a little tapping evident, ive got a bit of an ear when it comes to engine noises on a CVH (probably just paranoid)

Its not so much the cam, they are pretty hard. Its the poor design of the top end, and it requires very strong springs to stop bounce at high revs, and because the springs are so strong this is why the cam wears

There are ways of eliminating wear which im still experimenting with

Newman cams get over the wear issue as they are made from different steel. Give the guys a call there, very knowledgeable!

Its not so much the grade of metal, its the hardening process used. Im pretty sure the hardest cam available would still suffer considerable wear, although maybe not as fast.

Check these out from newmans site...

http://www.newman-cams.com/pdf/ford.pdf

http://www.newman-cams.com/pdf/camshaftselection.pdf

these two explain better than i can, when speaking with them they were confident that the cam would outlast the rest of the engine!

edit- they do say its essential to use the solid followers with the cam that maybe what helps
