sump gasket

sump gasket
my car is pissing oil. and i mean pissing. it emptys itself within days. So i took it to a garage who said it was the oil sump gasket, so they changed it, for £85. Then it kept leaking. So i took it to a different garage and he said its still the sump thats leaking, and the only way to change that gasket on an rs is to remove the engine, and the other garage hadnt done that so it wasnt fitted properly.
So, is he right? does the engine need removing?

load of ols balls mate ,
All you need to do is get inder the car , drop the starter motor off and zorst , i dont even fully remove this just tie it vver to the drivers side out of the way.
drop all the oil , and remove the sump.
take old gasket off and make sure it is clinicly clean with a bit of thinners .
get new gasket ( i only recoment genuine ford ones .( i have used others and they split , leek ) do it once and do it right .
get some instant gasket , hylomar etc and put a small amount around the sump place gasket on and then weight it down with some books , bricks , anything . leave for a couple of hours ,
The sealer isnt realy required to form a good seal , i just use it to hold the gasket on place . i have used super glue with good results .
After the sealer has gone off and the sump gasket aint goin any where , offer it back up to the engine and bolt it back on , follow the manuel torque settings as they can be over tightened and this will split the gasket .
Job done
put the starter and zorst back on , no more leeks

use some gasket sealent as well. as u find u may get little leaks as the thread in the block for the sum bolts maybe threaded or worn so they dont lock the gasket air tight

when they were changing the gasket, it took them hours and it kept falling off, and i remember the lad saying ppl usually take the engine out to change it, but they didnt. So myabe it isnt sealed right or somethin coz they never stuck it down.

took it back to the garage today.
They are now sayin that it is the crank shaft oil seal that needs replacing.
Gonna cost me around £90.
Dont fancy forking out nearly another ton especially when im not convinced thats the problem. But if i take it to another garage and ask them to have a look, then they say its the sump gasket, its gonna cost me to get it done again.

Sounds like they know they fooked up mate and dont want to fix it .
Be polite and ask if they can show you on the ramps exactly where the leek is commin from ,
If you can deffo see its the sump gasket go spastic mentalist on the little shits and start saying words like solicitor , small claims court , department of trade and industry , you get the drift ,
if your not sure still be polite and ask them if you get another garage to replace the sump gasket again ( because you are unsure of ther competance to do a little job like that ) and it does stop the leek , then they pay for the bill.
If all else fails and you fancy a trip to York , we'll get your car up on my ramps , replace the gaskets , oil pump and all , u pay for the gaskets , and my time is free

I had loads of trouble with my previous engine - just couldn't get the sump gasket to stop leaking - changed it about 10 times (5 myself and 5 at various garages etc). The engine blew up before I ever fixed it! I think the sump was over pressurising for some reason! Not a lot of help I know
As for placing the gasket correctly - try using some correctly sized grub screws to wind into the bolt holes, then you slide the gasket over these - which the rubber grips on the grub screw thread, then slide the sump up over and hold in place (or wind some bolts into the other holes) and then wind out the grub screws.

I'd be taking it round to Lee if I were you m8! Sounds like he knows what he's doing! PMSL@ taking the engine out! I done it before and used grease to hold it, deffo got to watch out for the torque settings and watch that the bolts are tightened evenly too, no use cranking one up at a time, it won't go on straight!
Good luck man!

Norton, good advice on here mate from a lot of switched on cookies. One thing I will add is that a mate of mine years ago told me to get a load of sump bolts (spare ones)and cut the heads off.Screw them into the block.Only a couple of turns and offer the sump and gasket up.slowly removed one and replace it with your proper bolt.Obviously you need to seal arond the ends good n proper, especially at the flywheel end.Just something that I have found works for me.My mate has works for ford for ages and knows the RS"s really well.If the buggers at ford do it to make their job easier then why the hell cant we.cheers an good luck.

yer ive heard of that method i managed to use the normal bolt as the gasket holds them in while ur navigating the sump under the car. useless the moment u press it against block as u end up with a dozon bolts or so on ya
be careful using to much sealent though as sometimes rs can suck the excess in to the sump and block the strainer.
