Doesn't need to be 4th gear...anything other than neutral will tell you.

"Official" method.

- Accelerate up to 4th gear
- Pedal to the floor at 1500 rpm
- hit the brake at 3500 rpm, keep the throttle fully depressed though (not longer than 5 secs)
- read your gauge now
- let your brakes cool down

On my car (std actuator at the moment) it makes a huge difference, whether I'm in first, second, third or fourth gear. Don't know what it's like with an uprated actuator, though

Whats all this holding in 4th gear and putting on the brakes business??

As far as I'm aware thats a technique a tuner will use when road mapping to avoid flying down the road at 120mph whilst mapping?

Surely everyone hits full boost in all gears? What difference does it make what gear you're in .

Just drive along....put you foot down and see what the gauge goes round to

No way. 1st and 2nd gear go so fast that the turbo has no time to really spool up. 1st will not even spin the wheels properly because of larger turbo. 3rd gear is still spinning wheels, so the full boost will not really develop. 4th will show steady full boost no problem.

It's the technique which has been used by Ford mechanics for the last 20 years.

i was also told that as you usually hold 4th gear longer it lets you see if the boost creeps up slightly higher in 4th. This is why peeps with standard ecus often hit the boost cut in 4th but not in any other gear
