Default Amal valve - How does it work?

How does it actually work? Are there only two different positions, full boost and reduced boost? What PSI would a std RST make in each of these different positions?

And in which situations does the ECU switch over to reduced boost? I've heard that it happens somewhere up the rev range (5000 rpm?) to keep the engine safe.

Edit: Oh, and one more thing: What happens if I disconnect the plug from it? Will it stay on full or on reduced boost? I guess the latter, as I think full boost is opened by an electric impulse.

imnot intirely sure how it works...

but unpluggin the amal halfs the boost...

dont think it reduces the boost at a certain rev mate think it only reduces boost if ACT's get too high or if it starts to dept.

i think the way to set em up is to get *half moon* on ur actuator wen u pull the arm over the pennys arm... then if the amal valve has no jets in i think it runs bout 5 psi...

then go from there with adjustin the jets to get ur boost u want...

think wen ppl have 2 stage boost contol is coz they put a manual over ride on the plug to the amal valve... hence halvin ur boost at the flick of a switch!

hope thats pretty accurate and helps!

It utilizes PWM to achieve whatever between the "full boost" and "reduced boost".

So is it possible to increase boost just by chipping the ECU? Can't believe that.

you have to have the ecu chipped to be able to increase the boost otherwise the overboost protection will cut in at 10.5 psi.

and you can do without the amal valve!

OK, I got something wrong there. The amal valve can't increase boost more than to the standard 7 or 8 PSI obviously.

But if it is like Jesse says, the amal valve does not only have two fixed positions but is working stepless. So could you also use it as an electrical controlled bleed valve by wiring some kind of control unit up to it?

Well when I unplugged the amal valve completely and put in a bleed valve instead, I didn't get as much boost as I wanted. Seems like the bleed valve wasn't able to bleed enough air. Now I've connected amal and bleed valve in a row and everything is working fine.

I'm just curious if there's anything I could do to make better use of the amal valve, e.g. use it as a stepless electrical controlled bleed valve.

Exactly how I'm using it. Megasquirt ecu controlling the PWM to keep desired boost pressure through the range.
