yeah , whole kit or just a cam itself?
if you do not lower the rocker assembly with a smaller washer , you will have a horribly tappety sound as the lifters are now extended to max and cannot follow the valve

i had a similar prob with a vernier which did not "butt up" against the washer . the slot on the vernier had worn slightly and was knocking against the key on the cam , very noisy at idle , went away with some rpm
this washer actually keeps the vwernier in place , check it out and tighten

well you can check the obvious things like looking at them but it will be hard to tell.
To be honest, the only way the top end can tap, is if there is gaps.
If you spin the engine over in the same manner as you would to check valve clearnces using the rule of 9, you can play with each rocker and see if there is any noticeable play, if there is that indicates wear, if its tight and no slop then that should be a good indication there is no wear![Grin](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
you did say you fitted a brand new cam and set of lifters didnt you?

you need 10-40 for cvh hydrolic lifters.... they are all noisy on 0-40....its a tad to thin,
millers 10-40 race spec fully sinthetic oil is the booolocks,
and you also may have low oil flow to the head, if its quiet at idle.

ian r Lets not go into Piper cams
saphc05, if you leave lifters in a tub of oil to soak there is no way that alone will get the air out, the hydraulic lifters meter oil so pressurised oil fed into them will remove air quickly and effeciently

being a ford tech since 1988 ive found that leaving lifters in oil does help cos ive seen other people just throw them in and have problems though you are right pressurised oil should remove the air but this is not always the case, safer to have oil in on start up than a couple of seconds after
