Default temperature guage keeps going up and down....

as above.... if i start the car and let it warm up it get to a certain temperature then the guage just drops..... dad says this is when the thermostat is opening but i've never seen this happen on any other car i've had.... then i was driving down the a12 at about 70 and the temp guage was going up to the top of NORM slowly, then dropping to the bottom of NORM, then slowly going back up then down etc etc..... when i slowed down to about 40 it evened out in the middle... i've recently changed the thermostat and housing and the temperature sender.... anyone got any ideas why it might be doing this??

thanks.

The wire itself at a guess, might need cutting back and a new enfd putting on

Disconnect the sender wire and earth it, if the gauge rises to the red then i'd say it was the sender. One car i had the gauge would go up to normal, but as it got hotter and approached the fan cutting in it would go back down and the fan would cut in on the cold section, i never really looked at it to find the fault but im sure it was the sender.
