Sometimes theres a serated washer on one of the wheel studs but usually they are just corroded on and need a few taps with a manly hammer

It really makes no difference anyway neither front or back are held on by the large retaining nut,but you will need to remove it to do the wheel bearing. If the wheel bearings you have bought are any good they will come with new retaining nuts.If not buy 1xN/S and 1x O/S from Fords
and remember they are different-the N/S one is L/H thread(I think!)

at the mo i just wanna change the discs.ive taken the caliper off and the only thing that i can see is the big nut in the middle which i dont have a socket that fits so the reason for asking was so i could go and buy just the socket!

The nut does not hold the disc on!! With the caliper removed the disc will now come off.The disc may appear to be held on with the nut but isn't.
Please attempt to tap the disc from behind at various places around the circumference and the disc will 'crack' off the hub.PLEASE TRY!!

as above that nut has is nothing to do with changing the disc. give the disc's a good spray with wd40 and then have ago tapping them off with a big hammer. also some times a good idea to get a set of pullers around the disc while your hitting it just to give you some extra pressure.
I think the best way round it though is to get some heat on the disc so it expands slightly then it would fall off a lot less effort.
I did the front disc's and pads on my mondeo the other week and ended up using a chiesel to split them as i didn't have a heat gun.

1 other thing just check you haven't got a grub screw holding the disc on anywhere. my escos is a k plate and i dont know if the later one's would be any diffferent
