Depends on power level and precisely how quiet you want it.

A 3" off the shelf system is okay for 450bhp, but beyond that I would be thinking of a custom built set-up for ultimate power. However, the 3" system is unlikely to pass noise requirements in the UK for track days, but I don;t know how strict it is in Australia. If not very, then the Blue Flame version is the cheapest, although the Mongoose is better quality / fit.

A custom one like mine would set you back £1400, but it will pass even the strictest noise regulations due to it's four silencers....

If you can wait, then I would add your name to the list that was on here not long ago for the group buy of a Magnex. A bit more expensive than the Mongoose and Blue Flame items, but fits as well as the standard one and has fractionally more flow .

He wants 450bhp, so the cat will either be a restriction or will die from the excessive fuelling .

Mike, what sort of power would the Magnex sytstem be good for? or would it always be best to have custom made, to reduce on power loss??

Also with the custom made does the car have to be left there quite some time or is it something that can be turned round in a day?

Get a SCORPION, nice sound, just right, the cost of a system like mike's which is a work or art, without doubt would pay for a lot more power to be produced by other tuning means, offsetting any small bhp losses that a cheaper system might incur, that is my view.

A Magnex would be good for around the 500bhp mark.

The car would have to be left with Hayward & Scott for a week. It takes in excess of 35 man-hours to make from scratch, hence the price.

I personally think mine sounds really nice. The four silencers don't make it sound like an electric car you know .

Personally, if you HAVE to have cats, I would recommend doing what the Belgians do: Have a standard exhaust with the three cats to fit on the car to get it by the Australian MOT equivalent and then refit the Magnex afterwards, which I think would be more than sufficient. With an aftermarket ECU, you can even have a special "MOT" map .

I don't know enough about your emission requirements to know if a 100 cell race cat would be sufficient to get you through your MOT, so I don't think the extra cost of this on top of the custom exhaust price would be a wise move, in case a single cat was not sufficient to get through. You'd then be well pissed off having spent close to £1600 on an exhaust that didn't do what you wanted .

Unfortunately, at this power level, the Scorpion exhaust (due to it's 2½" diameter baffles) would be too much of a restriction and would be putting a strain on the engine (excessive back pressure at high rpm) when driven hard. Hence why I didn't mention the Scorpion system....

DO people really have that much of an issue with Mongoose systems, they always seem to come second to Magnex's even though they're now discontinued

I personally think they fit very well, and I'd imagine for all of us DIYers its easier to fit than the double boxed magnex system!

It WILL be loud!, I said IT WILL BE LOUD! However, just have a look up the rear silencer and see if it has the baffles reducing down to smaller than the 3" bore of the rest of the exhaust. If it has, then it won't be suitable for above 350bhp. However, I am led to believe that following this criticism of their system that they have switched to a 3" baffle like the Mongoose / Blue Flame, but I have not seen one recently to confirm this, so I can only say what I know .

My old system had the rear box removed (Mongoose, centre box was kept) and that was loud!

IE drowning out a R33 with 500hp in the homesdale tunnel!

ive just checked and it does reduce down below 3 inch diameter.ive just rebuilt the whole engine and it will be running stage 3 spec.im planning on leaving it at this spec as it will be more reliable.was planning to take it to ford fair on the track.will it pass the noise regs or u think it be way to loud for it?

Will be fine for this power level, and I believe that Ford Fair is a full noise day (best check with one of the Fast Ford bods on here)? If so, then no worries there either . However, it won't pass the limits for any days that have a noise limit .

Mike

Whats the most cost effective way forward for a 550bhp engine, are there any other firms you could recommend??

Although your system does look rather good

The Hayward & Scott system is the cheapest option for the required performance and noise level, so it would have to be them IMO. Speak to Ian and he will sort you out .

I will hopefully be going for around 500 bhp with a Mongoose will be interesting to see when it does become restrictive. Most we have seen so far is 380atw but this was with fairly low boost and revs.

My car has a power engineering 3" system, looks like it has a sports cat/ center box and a rear box!, was thinking of chopping out the cat, as with the two silencers it should still be fairly subtle?
My autronic nova runs a 3" straight through system with only a rear silencer, and that still manages to stay quiet!

Quick Reply: best exhaust??
