Default gear knob removal advice (without damaging the gaitor)

hi all a rather stupid ask but how do i remove the gear knob on my esccos is it just a simple case of un screwing it or is the pull up function a key to getting it off without damaging the gaitor

Its a pull off !! , i thought it was a twist off and i broke the cable to the reverse linkage

I thought the early cars were pull off and the later cars a screw on, but I could be wrong!!!
