Default EsCos .... is this a broken exhaust-mainfold gasket ?

Hi all,

Drove my EsCos to work this morning and it started to sound like there's a hole in the exhaust (but coming from bonnet) and when coming on boost it gives a "hissing" sound...

I have opened the bonnet and the sound seems to come from the exhaust manifold. When rev'ing there is a little smoke from manifold too....

Exhaust manifold gasket ? ..... is it hard to fix / change ?

Cheers
Thomas

It might be the infamous craked manifold

Check the underside of the manifold

Damn..... hope not...

Where do you get another manifold if it should turn out to be cracked ?
Or....can it be repaired ?

Any RS Breakers like Pete @ ashfeild or Paul @ North Yorks.

Paul is breaking a few 4x4 cossie's at the mo.

I dont think they can be repaired.

You wouldn't happen to have an e-mail adress to these companys by any chance ?

Im from Denmark and finding a manifold here is pretty difficult.

Have mailed Paul ... ... we'll se what he has.

Is it a tough job to remove / fit manifold ? .... im thinking of doing it myself ... am tired of always having to rely on other mechanics everytime the Cossie has a problem.

PMSL @ Paul

Its not the easiest job in the world.

Take off Boost Pipes
Take Off Heat Shield
Remove Turbo from the bottom part of the mainfold.

And drop the exhaust out the way.

Then you should be able to get to the top bolts, then access the others
from underneath the car.

HTH...

Alright.... doesn't sound too hard .... just time-consuming.

Do I also need to do all of that if it turns out to be just a fooked gasket or can you access the manifold enough to get a new gasket in there, without removing turbo ? .. (have no heat-shield)

Nope the mainfold will have to either be losend off, or taken of completely.

Plus if you add just one, i can gaurantee the others will start to leek

It seems that it is just the bolts that have come loose. (not all of them but a fair few)
So might not need to unbolt the manifold after all.

Will try to tighten them all (not easy... ) and see if it sounds right again.

the manifolds warp in time, so if you take it off best to get it skimmed flat again cost about £10 to do. also you need a spanner like this to remove the turbo

manifold skimmed

First im just gonna tighten the bolts, but when I get the time, it will come all the way off for a skim and new bolts.
