If it grips it will break a Timken "english" axle, they have problems at around 150lb/ft ... yes many have had more put through them on the rollers but thats a gentle increase in 4/5th gear, not dumped clutch @5000rpm in 1st. It will break either the shafts or the CWP if it grips, many on the road with skinny tyres last due to the fact that they break traction before the 150lb/ft is reached, and while the wheels are spinning the axle isnt under load.
The Best option is the Salisbury "atlas" axle. Fostek can build you a 48.5" plate LSD one not a lot... or build you a fully floating Ap braked rar end for ... a lot

Hey mate,
Use a salisbury 4HA axle from a reliant scimitar. I know you are all laughing, but they are cheap(I have six) and you wont break it. They were also used on mk2 Jaguars, so you can get an LSD for peanuts. My old capri mk1 uses one, without LSD, 0.5 inches narrower than standard MK1 atlas, and i have 295 BHP at the wheels!! I have enough torque to pull down a tower block, and have been using this axle for 4 years. You would have to change the mounts to leaf springs, if thats what you are using, and have the hubs/drums redrilled to Ford 4.25 inch PCD from triumph 4.5" pcd. But hey the axles gonna cost £150 max!! O and the prop flange matches, but needs shortening slightly(mine cost £35) by about 1".

I know they use Toyota Hiace light duty truck axles in Finland in the rally cars, really strong, right traction if you go with bubble arches, proper LSD and good ratio if you go 5 speed or 6 speed box and 16" wheels. Such axles is found in every scrap yard for almost nothing. Ofcourse you have to fit some mountings to it, but well worth the efforts hence it is a really strong and reasonable way to go.

what sort of tyres are you running? if they're just spinning up all the time then you may get away with it.... for a little while. As Gary said earlier... if it grips, you can wave bye bye.

Cossie power and english axle do not mix.im not trying to put the mockers on it,but if you want a proper engine then get a proper axle, transmission and body strengthening. If you need advice then you wont go wrong with retromotorsport above and their work is fantastic, but be warned.....they do things properly.

If your going to heat treat any metal... its not a home brewed thing... the heat time and temp have to be controlled and also the quench time and medium has to be controlled. Just get an Atlas... cheaper in the long run
