I know they use Toyota Hiace light duty truck axles in Finland in the rally cars, really strong, right traction if you go with bubble arches, proper LSD and good ratio if you go 5 speed or 6 speed box and 16" wheels. Such axles is found in every scrap yard for almost nothing. Ofcourse you have to fit some mountings to it, but well worth the efforts hence it is a really strong and reasonable way to go.
