What engine for my MK 2
Hello. Im looking to get 200-250 BHP for my MK 2 Escort, currently on a 2 litre Pinto and wondering what options I have? I dont have a clue...all I know is that I wanna stay normally aspirated non-turbo.
Can I endlessly tune at the Pinto, or is there a bigger lump that can be dropped in to avoid a whole lot of hassle and expense?
Ive heard of things like Vauxhall red tops, etc.
What non turbo route do I have for 200 BHP plus?
Thanks for any advice lads.

Atmo YB is just a naturally aspirated version of the turbo engine, far from ideal as the engine was never designed to be NA so bits need changing to be suitable, they are strong engines though but I'd have a xe over one any day of the week as their far better suited, I suspect the people that use one are only purists or classed where they have to run a Ford engine as you don't get much for your money.
Pectel T2 is a ecu, on a NA engine most ecu's will do, T2 is expensive and unless you have bundles of money to throw at it I can't see the point in using one, basic MBE would run a atmo YB perfectly, only issue with the Honda engine is that you need to use a ecu that can activate the Vtec although most cheap stuff will happily do that these days.
So anyway I'd be using a Honda S2000 engine personally.
A guy on Turbosport just had his engine dynoed at over 270hp with 170+lb ft
Spec is stock engine, tb's, dry sump, billet flywheel and custom manifold although stock one is very good.
FAR more reliable than anything else for the money, you can keep them on a wet sump but clearance can be a issue as its a tall engine
The other bonus is that most of the engine packages come with a 6 speed box that can actually take high rpm unlike anything that you will bolt to a Yb engine ( or xe etc. )
I priced up every option when I was doing mine and the Honda as a package was several thousand pounds cheaper than similar powered engines but wouldn't suffer from hard use making a much better engine to use long term.

Depends who's doing the work, for t2 you can pick up for 4-500 second hand, 625 brand new and a basic loom would do, so not silly expensive, just reliable and for us nice to map.
James, I bet a atmo yb would be cheaper to do between 200-250bhp then a Honda, as no need for a dry sump, other wise most bits are the same. And it can be done on a 205block engine which you can pick up for pennies

I bet you can't supply a 250hp na yb for as much as a s2000 engine, don't forget they have 240hp as standard and that's no more than Ł2500 with a gearbox and everything, full running package. Fit a ecu and you can massively improve the mid range over standard.
I'll take a guess that a yb head supplied and ported with throttle bodies is atleast a couple of grand and that's not Inc the valvetrain, pulleys, pistons, ecu, gaskets oil pump and bearings. Then you have a gearbox to buy so that's another grand or more.
Not knocking them as I think their great but having been down the route of doing something like this nothing is in the same league as the Honda engine for the money, not even close.
It's the same with pintos, 200hp is a lot of money ! A stock Xe on tb,s and the mildest Kent cams gives a very reliable 200hp and the core engine is Ł200 "if" it ever went wrong.
Ford engines generally are very expensive to modify, atleast in na trim

best to go for the import version of the lexus, it`s called an altezza rs200, 210 bhp standard and quicker than the lexus and still retains the 6 speed alloy box

i would not even bother with cosworth in na form if you want a bhp figure over 180bhp as its really expensive and not worth the amount you put in for the bhp you get back, lots claim to have hit 200bhp with cosworth na form easily but truth is they have spent thousands and are only just hitting 180bhp, if i was you id stick to something simple like a 2.0l zetec silvertop, everything you need to put that engine in youe escort is on this website and im sure they will give you plenty of advise when it comes to buying
