Default Fitting Cosworth Engine in MK1 Escort

Hi All,
I am new to this forum stuff and require some info.
I have bought a sapphire 4x4 and am going to break this so i have the engine and ancils for transplanting into my MK1 escort.
The thing is what is the best way to go about this as there are so many different ways that people have done this.
Any info regarding sumps to use, 2wd cossie std or modifed or RS2000 or cut the crossmember etc.
Also what is the problem with the bulk head lip, does it require cutting back for the engine or will it go in without mods.
Any info on these transplants would be gratefully recieved.
Johnny....

hello mate, im new to this site as well, but i have done over (4) mk1/2 escort cosworth conversion's? here is a quick crack down! from the start you need a very good shell? the other is how you what to do the conversion! as you can use the floor pan etc from the 4x4 cosworth, but to me thats alot of work.... to me the easy way is useing the shell the way it is, but there a lot of body mods needed? and there is alot of parts to buy to put the cosworth in... unless you a very handy man at the job! ive got to say there is no saving money on a escort conversion! so the shell will need seam welding some people dont, but to me its a must! depends on spec of engine, you can fit 5-link set up for bome prof performance, but again some people you use leaf springs and tramp bar's? the bulk head lip is a yes! you need to shave it back the width of the head and close to the bulk head flat-out, then weld it! gearbox tunnel, best off useing the one off the 4x4 cosworth? or use a grp4! the rad sround needs mods to fit std intercooler or you buy the conversion kit all in one, then its a easy kit to fit? worldcup x-member is needed, useing worldcup pinto mounts but you need a mod sump, dont piss on with a RS2000 sump! then there's your rear alxe, again depends on wot power you got, atlas is top right up to 490HP but that has to be a motorsport set up! you can use a english as my mate duzz with a LSD unit std shaft, that run's 340bhp till now still no problems! for brakes, suspension is all need to be upgrade'd dont use std crap... it dont work.... ive tryed.... if there is any thing else let me know.... hope this helps you!

Thanks for that,
The shell i have is real good, just crying out for something mad.
Have been picking up parts for a while now.
4x4 cossie, T5 box, 2wd sump and pickup/pump, 7" X pack rs alloys, bilstein struts, ap calipers etc.
The back axle is my worry as i want to keep the car looking standard, no big wing arches.
So the options as you say are atlas and 5 link or english with lsd and tramp bars.
The thing is will i be gutted after finishing it that i did not go down the arches and 15" wide alloy route with big money atlas instead of the standard look with maybe the narrow atlas or english on leaf springs.
Decisions, what to do.

hello mate again... the way you are saying it is the way i like it ? for me keeping the car looking stock, is the best thing! to me putting big arches on is a give away! but its your choice????????? but here is the real thing... i to was thinking of putting big arches on my mk2, but after building a mk1 escort with a stage3 set up and rolling on 7x13 superlites and 175/50/13 tyre's????????????? IT WAS FUN.... power slideing all over realy quick, pin back in your seat! its just a different car with ton's of power! now if you arch it and put on big wheels and tyres then you will get the power down to the wheel with little fun (depends on power).... but thats how i see it... every one has there own choice and how there want to drive the car!!!!! what you realy need to do is drive a mk1/2 escort with a cossie lump in to see wot you want? or ask other's on the site who have arche the cars, and see how there drive ... let me know how you get on...

hi
you dont need to fork out for world cup xmember just use your escort xmember just trim it a bit to clear the sump
then add strengthing plate to it then you can used 2wd sump and rs2000 engine mounts my mate has got the temp plate to do the xmember we have done 2mk2 and 2mk1 with cosworth in them

Thanks guys for the info.

Think i am going to keep the standard arches but maybe go for the short 5 link boxes and see if i can pick up a baby atlas, depends if i can get 1 cheap enough.

Good luck with the 4x4 conversion, lots of welding for that 1.
My mate back home has done this and is running the granada cossie V6 with twin turbos through the 4x4, is always crackin the shell and is always welding her up as it is just to much for the shell, he uses this for autocross and it is something else to see and hear when out in the grass.

I will get pictures up once i get started, but looks as if this will be last on the list to do in my month off as the girlfriend called me over the weekend to say that the cold feed to the water tank at home burst in the loft on Friday night and flooded the house.
So the escort will yet again be talking a back seat now that i will have to sort the house, only finished decorating at christmas and was hoping to get a good hit on the cars when i got home in April.
There always seems to be something else to do when i get home.
Anyway will strip out the engine and box from the MK1 when home and if time strip what i need of the cossie 4x4 and sell the rest of the bits.
Bloody insurance company already coming the bag, she called to tell them the problem on Friday and was told they dont have a record of our policy and to call back on Monday, Scanned all doc's and payment receipt from the bank and emailed them it, as it was out of office hrs, Monday is the first they would do anything, Some 24hr help service that. Tossers.
Will be kickin up shit as soon as the office opens at 9am.

sorry to hijack the thread, looking at doing a cossie conversion. Can you use a rs2000 sump or is it just as easy to modify the x-member & use 2wd sump. Also does it matter 2wd or 4wd engine loom?? Will be looking at keeping standard x-member & rs 2000 mounts

i would be inclinded not to use the standard crossmember and mounts m8.even medium power cossie turbo will rip the mounts to bits imo.if you do wrap the o's mount in heat wrap as that will melt it and it will brake even quicker.you can use the rs2000 sump if you get the oil return put in to the sump for the turbo oil pipe.smithy still uses all standard stuff in his mk1 before he stripped it fo r the rebuild
