Default Anyone used Toucan broadband?

Got told about this yesterday - Toucan (who do phones, mobiles, internet) do 2mb unlimited broadband + free weekend calls for £15.99 a month! Is this the cheapest 2mb bband on the market?

They any good tho?

Cool. I was thinking of going to them instead of Tiscali. Both companies say unlimited broadband but both operate a "fair usage policy" so I was wondering how they comparred and also how good the Toucan service/quality is - ie downtime etc...

only been using it since the 24th December so difficult to make a judgement. However when I phoned them with regards a password issue i.e. I couldn't work out whether the characters were 1,0,O,I etc. they answered promptly and sorted it out, always a good sign

I think most broadband suppliers operate some form of fair usage policy although I don't use that much to be fair.

The only thing was that my modem only turned up yesterday although this could be due to the xmas period I suppose and I didn't need it anyway

Oh upstream rate is 288 Kbps.

Errm...

Toucan are a Tiscali-reseller, from what I remember......meaning they both run off the Tiscali network, but Toucan just sell Tiscali's products as their own.

Not seen a good review of them yet, apart from the ones above......some examples:

Don't bother with Toucan, I joined them on the 22nd November, and not had good speeds from day one (12kbps) - less then dial up from 5.30pm onwards.

They dont comply to their own terms and conditions, you're given the run-around by their customer support, and their tech support is like amateur hour..

I have complained to OfCom, the ASA and Trading Standards about them, as they are stating unlimited whereas they cap your service if your usage exceeds 7gig a month (despite no monthy usage stated in t&c or the Fair Usage policy).
I use toucansurf for my BB service, Yes, I know its operated by Tiscali, but I was better than going thro them direct.

I am on the 512k service, and for the last month-and-a-half, I've suffered extremely low speeds. The max I am getting is 258kbps and lowest is 4kbps. Yes, I repeat, 4kbps, but the average is around 111kbps for a supposedly 512k service.

Despite numerous calls to Toucan, who are helpful, they pass my details onto tech support in India, who promise call backs but never do, and when they call, they dont speak English and then treat me like an idiot. I know its not my PC, as I've used 3 different ones and the speed is the same on all, so it's obvious it's the modem or the line itself.

The excuse made now, by the Indian call center, who are operated by Tiscali, say the whole of the uk is suffering from poor speeds, and that its BT's fault that their exchanges cannot cope. They say its not the fault of Toucan/Tiscali, as they can only provide a service if the exchange and BT give them good service.

Hmm, bit dubious now.... I have the old Freeserve 512 BB service, and other than wanting to upgrade to a faster line, I have had virtually no problems with service or line speed and all that....

You sure Dave? I must have missed that part - they charging £15.99 for the BBand and free weekend calls, but to use their service you have to pay an additional £9.99 on top of the £15.99???

Dave, I had a quick run through the process and you don't HAVE to take the £9.99 Toucan line rental (there's an option to not select it) so you end up paying the £15.99 rather than £25.98....

But the stoopid Toucan website says I can't have 2mbps line at my gaff - most it will let me have is 1mbps - even tho Tiscali will let me have 2meg

No checker is 100% accurate until you put an order in and BT do their own test......but the following availability-checker seems to be the most accurate I've found so far (BT's own public-facing checker):

For Telephone Number 01992 ****** on Exchange LEA VALLEY

Your exchange has ADSL broadband.

Our initial test on your line indicates that you may be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a line rate of 1Mbps, 512Kbps or 256Kbps. However due to the length of your line the 1Mbps service may require an engineer visit who will, where possible, supply the broadband service.

If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to confirm if your line is suitable for the service you wish to purchase.
