....A Ferrari cambelt on a 348 has to be changed every 20k or 2 years...WHY??????.....Surely a cambelt would last longer....is it a Ferrari scam?

Incidentally can a cambelt loose strength over time regardless of miles?

Mines due.......aint been done for 5 years BUT has only covered 10k so does it REALLY need doin???...(Gonna get it done whatever anyway although i aint DIY as the engine has to come out..apparently a 20 hr job ..and about £1200 )

Might be to do with the higher revs or the amount of force applied to the cambelt by operating all those valves?

Who knows!

cant see a ferrari garage charging £60 an hour ill have a rough guess at more like £2500 for the cambelt change. so if the cambelt asnt been changed does this mean the disks and pads need changing aswell? that could be another £4k

I would say if it has only done that many miles in 5 years it may of gone brittle so should be changed............But, like you said it SHOULD be done every 2 years or 20k miles.

As Tiff said the belts do go brittle after time. Even at £1500 bet its cheaper than having the valves changed if the belt does let go!!

Cam belts have fibre cores and these deterorate with age. Moisture and heat will reduce life too. No-way to tell but do you fancy risking the repair bill Vs Service cost

I think Ferrari states that sorta service interval to be safe rather than sorry: they wouldn't like warranty claims over fucked engines and seeing as most Ferrari owners will have no problem affording it they might as well.

As said i AM getting it done.....its not being driven anymore till its done.

Sean Forsyth if you take it to an official dealer YES...but not if you go independant...and just so happens our company supplies one....so should get discount off that....no probs as regards service history as apparently this company is recommended by the owners club so wont ruin the history......Most parts i can get myself thru our company Plus its all Bosch under the bonnet....and the garage is happy to fit good i supply.....You dont think i just woke up one day and said Ferrari without researching do you?!!!!!

Know someone who sold his within 3 months. Belt change is a tad over 3K & £640 to charge/replace a flat battery, think the air con has to be removed or something like that. Ferrari is a status symbol not a drive hard every day car, pose & enjoy Phil drive it hard & you will go broke very quickly.
Rod
ps. Yes i could afford one .

Agree, but those stamps are vital on resale.
I test drove a Ferrari sometime back in a comparison with a Lotus. I drove out with the Lotus. Running costs swayed it.

ALL cambelts should be changed every few years really, ferrari are just more realistic about this than other makes which is why you never hear of a ferrari belt failing despite the extra strain its under.

Think of all those valves, and how hard the spring ratings are, and you realise thats a lot of work to expect a corrded belt to do at 8000rpm.

I believe there are now two different spec belts available for the 348 though, one of which is rated for 50% longer than the other (3 years instead of 2)

As you say Phil, everything is bosch so you should be laughing there
I believe its on moronic 2.7 isnt it? Same as every lawnmower in germany so loads of spares about.

What sort of cock are you ? Rod said the running costs were cheaper on the Lotus and that is what swayed it (as performance is equal ). Cambelt on Lotus is every 36,000 miles or 36 months, whichever comes first. Lotus only want £1k (9hr job), Harvey charges £500 for the same thing (and does Ferarri's as well - in fact he had a pim...., er I mean a Testarossa ).

Early F-355's were Motronic 2.7 as well.........but by 1997 the factory was fitting Motronic 5.2 (All 550 Maranello's also used Motronic 5.2)...........

All 355's and 360's require a "scheduled" cam belt change every 3 years........on some cars that can be as little as 5 to 6 k miles of use for the belts

Neil Lucas (Ferrari independant service tech) told me that a belt that is well overdue for changing could well fail on engine start-up - especially if the car has been "laid up" for a long time.

That will get the belts changed and nothing else. You should also get the tensioners changed at the same time. Also, there is some debate as to whether or not some of the ‘cheaper’, non-franchised dealers even take the engine out for this change. To be done properly, the engine has to come out on 348/355’s and that pushes the cost up.

The current, approved Pirelli belt is good for 3 years. Interestingly enough, the guys in the States run the same belts for up to 5 years, with the endorsement of Ferrari NA. Draw your own conclusions…
