Hi lads,

Just wondering what kind of insurance people are paying on their ERST's?

I'm 19, coming up to two years no claims in a few months (** touches wood ** lol) and might be looking at getting one depending on insurance etc.

What are the running costs of owning one like? Are they suitable as an everyday car to go back and for work (mainly duel carriageways)?

I would probably buy one off a site like this as its an enthusiasts site and you've a better chance of getting a good example...the only thing is...I'm worried about rust etc

I insured my first RS at 19.Think it cost me Ł1400 at the time.

Plenty of people use them as everyday car's,no reason why you cant

Rust is a problem.There are a few places you will need to check.Ideally you should take someone in the know along when you view as there is alot of rubbish out there that have been covered up

 

Oh,i didnt have any no claims discount then either.Only pay Ł350 now @ 24

 

Owned my first one at around 23 and my insurance was around the 700quid mark

I've owned 5 RS Turbo's and used every one of them as everyday transport with no problems and tbh the fuel costs are more than acceptable.

As for rust, well its like any car what is 15yrs old and above, you are gonna get alot with some rust and your gonna get a lot of nails, its best taking someone who knows what they are looking at to look in all the trouble spots that are associated with a Escort.

But be patiant and look at plenty and you will find yourself a good motor

 

what am I likely to pay for a good example? Ł2500?

I know its abit of a dull question but how much are you spending on fuel *roughly* on say one that is about 170bhp?

I heard this figure is easily attainable without running silly boost and spending a fortune...is this about right? What kind of things would I have to do to get that sort of power reliably?

I would prob ask my mate to come with me if I went to look at one as he has had a few when he was younger and has owned a Sierra 4x4 Cossy so he's pretty good with the blue ovals!

What kind of features can I expect to find on an ERST? PAS, c/l etc etc

If I could get a quote for around Ł1400 (roughly Ł100 p/m) then I think I might well get one...excellent!

Anyhow...sorry for all the questions but I'm new to the ford scene!

For a good example your likely to pay 5k. I know theres 2 mint cars for sale at the moment. A red s2 one which ive seen in the cars for sale section and a grey s2 which ive seen on the cars for sale section on the rsownersclubs site. Both are mint examples and not like when people say they are mint and they end up being rust buckets.

 

5K....ouch might be out of my price range there but who knows!

170bhp easy to get mate?

 

I got my S2 as my first car when I was 19, no NCB and it cost me Ł1850 tpft. You just need to ring around as many companies as possible!!!

 

so its worth considering tpft is it mate? have always been under the impression fully comp was the one and only type of cover to go for? ?

 

tptf is worth considering if your less likely to crash it and if its worth less than 4k and 170bhp should be easy enough you will get 150bhp without chipping it

 

im 19 no claims what so ever, on my dads insurance and it costs me dad Ł1000 to insure him and me as a named driver

and 170bhp is easily done m8, kent cam, chipped, zorzt sorted

 

^^^ what insurance company mate? Is that using all your dads no claims?

lol, I mentioned to my mam's boyfriend (he does quite abit with cars) about getting an Rs turbo and he was like they are old, rust worse than nova's (have had a few of them and he always took the right p*ss, lol) and questioned why I should get one over something like a saxo VTR bcause they are newer and dont rust, have power steering etc etc

What are your replies to comments like these lads??

I'll probably have about Ł2k - Ł2.5K to get one...am I likely to be able to get a decent example for that much (couldnt afford 5k like AKRS1 mentioned)...I'm not after a concourse car or anything as I dont want something that I'll be afraid to drive (will be using it as an everyday car) but also dont want something that is a rust bucket covered up with hammerite (has happened before,lol).

How have you found yours for reliability lads? and how do you drive?! lol

are parts expensive in general?

no1) an rs turbo will whoop a vtr

2) vtrs have shit seats

3)for the price of a ok vtr u get a fu*kin gr8 s2

4) there must be 1000000 vtrs for every rs turbo

5) its a saxo

6)put out 95 (?) bhp compared to 132ish on a rs turbo

7) saxos look shite compated to a rs

8) u get the turbo rush in a rs

9)if i remember rightly, in this or last months max pooer they reackon the rs turbo costs less per extra bhp than every car bar a 5 turbo (but with a 5 turbo u get 5 mins of boxy fun then... BANG!!!)

i payed 2000 for my radient red s2 wid 5 owners n 85 k, mint interior, ok bodywork, full mot, 5months tax, 4 good tyres etc only bit of rust at battery tray (had sills done for last mot), standard bar 90 spec, zorst (not sure wat brand!!! no writin on it ) dump valve, and the obligatory clear front n side indicators

hope that sways you away from saxos

5k for a good example? thats rubbish. I Know of one thats just been sold for Ł2200 white H reg 91k immaculate inside and out. Its finding the right person not right car. Yeah us ee dreamers advertising their rsts in fastford etc for 5grand, i'll probably do the same but at the end of the day there still like 14-19year old escorts.

I bought my rs turbo at 17 (couple of months ago) and tried to insure it but didnt get much luck - only 3 companies out the whole yellow pages and even then the quotes were like Ł2500-3100.

I got quotes from Hyperformance, Zenith and Budget, try them and good luck with finding one, get a good one and you'll never look back. Buying my one is the best tyhing ive done in my life, I love it!

 

hi mate i was insured with elephant on my s2 no mods declared was paying 1200 notes tpft im 23 with a years no claims 1 accident not my fault and 5 points but make sure you declare your modscause youwill never know what happens , not bad really considering the enjoyment i had wish i never sold it
but it will be the best decision you will make cause they are so easil tuneable aswell
got a good quote from directline on the net cause im back on the hunt for an rs hopefully a s1 so got my fingers crossed good luck in your search and remember not to buy the first 1 you see mate

 

hey im 19 and a half wit two years no claims and just insured a s1 3rd party t+f forŁ1115 with interford!!! spot on its modded aswell lowered, stainless exhaust the usual!!! hope this helps (you can find them in the back of the ford mags.

 

Someone once told me females got cheaper insurance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
