Default Just wondered...Effects of cam change??? (Cossie Experts)

Just looking through the Burton Power catalogue and was looking at the camshafts...

Just wondered what the likely effects would be of the various cams they do.

they have a BD8,BD10,BD12 and a BD14 (as well as BD15 & BD16, but these require piston mods).

Ive got some of the tech. details here if needed such as Valve lift,Timing inlet/exh and duration.

I remember in the days when i had my first X-Flows and modded cams made a hell of a difference (i had a Kent 244 in my 1700 X-Flow)...

So what would be the likely outcome of these cams both in power, torque and as important where in the rev range they occur...

afraid not, i couldn't go....

I think people are wary of giving their opinion on this question, as it is a complex thing and obviously every different kind of engine type will respond differently...

However, im sure there must be some 'Experts' who have some experience of this....

It's a simple question, more lift/and or more duration = more air passing, basically the wilder the figures the more power but usualy shifts it up the rev range, ie the numbering systemon BD cams is std is BD8 basically every number higher is a bit hairier, so alters power output(when set up properly).
Cam spec dependant they will give different amounts of gain at different rpm's, they can also affect idle low down driving substantially if wild enough.

Cam's on a turbo car is far from simple IMHO

Which is why such a broad question hasnt got any sensible answers.

An answer to this question would basically be a book, so just buy one

From memory BD14s need pistons machining aswell but then as chip said theres alot of variables, as alot of ppl will know even standard cams leave little dents in pistons if the heads have been skimmed as the clearance is reduced, not heard of standard cams being used on 400bhp engines?! but then im no expert so.

I have been told how ever that with bd10s you do gain a bit of bhp from them but you do loose torque compared to standard cams which some ppl prefer!

As said, cams vary so very much, but with my experience, sometimes hard to get right, usualy gain but loose. I would use tried and tested methods, years ago we put a hairey cam in a customers E30 325i, he loved the midrange grunt, hated the lumpy idle.
