Default t34 or gt3071

Hello guys
as title says.I have both turbos but i do not know which to choose. Is the GT3071 more quicker spooling than t34 as it is roller bearing or not. Also what is the transient response?and if it is smoother than t34?

What power are you going for? Rule of thumb use the smallest turbo possible for the power you want.

Thanks. Lee.

Default sierra

It is a sierra cosworth 2wd.I want it to boost smoothly and have as much hp i can.Example t34 with 2bar have the same hp as gt30 with 1,5bar but a lot smoother. Is it going to happen or not?
Also gt3071 does it have a good spool compare with a t34?

I would sell them both and stick a Borg Warner efr on it and have it live mapped....but I am an efr convert, some have not seen the light yet.

Depends which exhaust housing, inlet cam..etc off course twin scroll turbos are very good..mine gt30 with 72 exh housing goes well definitely better than old t34 or ut t38(used it only few miles) and it is smoother, although for this you need live map to get the best from gt30..

Just based on what you’ve said I’d say the gt3071.
It will give you more power than the t34 at the same boost and if matched to your engine spec correctly will be a hoot compared to a t34

Cheers Paul

https://passionford.com/forum/genera...-gt3071-2.html

This thread is good reading, from what Marco paulo says it drives like a t3 off boost and feels like a t4 on boost which sounds awesome

Question, does it bolt straight on to a 4x4 manifold? Do they need v-band? Do they need water cooling?

I’m sure I heard somewhere that someone mounted one on a 4x4 manifold I could be wrong though, I went 2wd manifold when I fitted mine, they are v band fitted onto the down pipe, mine was water cooled, if it’s designed to be water cooled why try and bypass it?? Asking for problems there

I don’t think he was suggesting bypassing the water cooling, just asking if they are water cooled or not

Cheers, was only wondering if they require water cooling as previous owner has removed that setup on my current turbo so will need to re-install the setup. To be fair it’s been like that for 5-6 years with no problem but I’ll be using mine on track so would need it.

Would you add a turbo cooler rad? I am considering it on mine but cannot decide as the rad would possibly block my air filter that is poking right in to the front of the grill and would not want to get heat soak, I may just have a bespoke one to allow room for the filter still. I think Mark Shead says you only need it if the car sees hotter than normal temps ever which seems quite simple and obvious.

Think same as you will just try without it and see what temps are like, ideally do without as don’t want loads of hoses going everywhere lol. Just going for an oil cooler setup which I hope will be enough.

Yes, my new engine has an oil cooler and big wing, buggered if I know where it will all fit in my little 205 engine bay

I’ve always wondered about the necessity of the water cooling...

Precision turbos for example are mainly all oil cooled only, and if always going flat out like drag or on track wouldn’t the heat from the turbo try and heat up the coolant passing through it?? Raising engine cooling temps?
Does the turbo really need water cooling in some applications??

Cheers Paul

Andrew gallacher never used to use it don’t know if he does now that’s why the previous owner of mine did away with it as he worked for him. I’ve always been sceptical of cooling something using a product that is already at 100 degrees but time will tell lol.

Raising the coolant temp is what it is about, passing the heat to the cooling system but you are right as some do not need to be cooled. I would rather water cool and add aturbo cooler after though.
