Hi Glenn, surely you are not suggesting we are dishonest!!!
Most people do it , the breakers/scrap yards realise it goes on but in the grand scheme of their very lucrative business they are not that bothered.
There is a very big breakers not far from where I live and there is only one way in and one way out so it would be pretty hard to get anything large past the exit desk where you have to show them what you have got.

I remember jumping the wall and taking a gearbox out in the night time. long time ago now it was a corsair 2000E gearbox for a MK 1 escort. those were the days. Later in life i was a scrap car collector and was broken into many times. Pay back.

The breakers near me are sometimes with you when you get parts but when they aren't I still go to the main guy and pay up, no matter how small the item is, usually, if its small and not worth it, they won't bother charging.

The minute someone has something go missing from their personal stuff - it's the whole forum up in arms, but it's okay to steal from the scrap yard.

All my 'scrap' in the garage/shed and up the drive is mine Glenn, mine... I'm watching you lol

I dont think anyone steals big stuff ,its not possible these days, but a couple of nuts and bolts or srews, hardly the crime of the century is it?

you are not even allowed in the ones near me to pick your own parts off due to health and safety used to hear of a lot of robbing from them years ago, one lad jump the gate at night to steal a cherrybomb from a nova not taking into account the pavement outside the scrapyard was a lot higher than inside the scrapyard and he couldn't climb back out lol

I remember hearing a story many years ago, that a load of shiny engine bay bits were liberated out of a Saff in a breakers yard, using a few kebabs slung over the fence, to keep the gaurd dog occupied for a while...
Can't say I've ever knicked anything more than some fuses and a relay or two.

As above, I didn't think punters would be allowed to get the parts off themselves these day, for health and safety reasons!?

I had away a gas strut for the boot lid of my astra once, down a trouser leg and walked out looking disabled lol.

Served me right though as the next time I went there, I took some seats out of a calibra that was on the top stack. I was on my own and tried to lower them down while leaning out of the car, I lost my grip and fell out the fucker and landed on the ground lol

I'm reading this thinking the same thing, you think of junkie shoplifters as being the scum of society, this really isn't any different. I can't imagine being that hard up that I would feel the need to steal stuff.

Not really related, but i once went to a breakers yard to collect a 3 cylinder vauxhall engine they had advertised for a car we had in at work.

I turned up, and a "lady" came out and greeted me in the van asking if i was here to collect the engine,
I swear to god she looked like giant haystacks the wrestler. Anyway after paying for it she said "ill go and get it for you love", me thinking going to get a sack truck or even a forklift.
Oh no, she came back with the engine under one arm, she even opened the van door with the other arm and placed the engine inside

I put this thread up for a bit of banter cause no one posts threads these days.

Its not as if we are pinching parts that are worth loads of money amd selling them on to feed our drug habbit is it.

Not all of us are loaded. Chill out people.

never nicked anything from a scrapyard, i needed an 80 amp fuse for my old corsa diesel and couldn't get one off the shelf anywhere at short notice so went to the scrap yard and pulled one out of an old combo van, when i went to the counter to pay, they said don't worry about it. i think they were a bit surprised i didn't just stick it in my pocket and bugger off lol!

Last person I ever heard of that got caught nicking from a local breakers, got his fingers broke and barred for life. Scrapyards where once rife with nostalgic tin, now it seems there all full of dead rovers or french stuff and theres nowt worth pinching off either of those brands.

That's fine then it's not really theft if it's not worth much.

You can try and justify it whatever way you want, but It's still taking someone else's stuff without paying for it.

This thread has been taken the wrong way now, I am with Glenn on this, you are in a scrapyard or breakers surrounded by tons of parts big and small, you find the part you are looking for and stick a couple of nuts and bolts which you may need in your pocket. Come on guys, as I said ,hardly the crime of the century is it. Do you honestly think the scap yard or breakers will be bothered?
I recently went to a very big breakers to get a Front strut and spring and thankfully put some nuts and bolts from the car in my pocket. When I got it home and went to fit it I realised the centre threaded part was a bigger size and the top nut off the old strut was to small. I went through the bits I put in my pocket and bingo the right sized nut was there! Job completed and no, I did not feel guilty!

I don't get why you need to steel stuff, if it's only nuts and bolts why not just show them with the stuff paying for? It's not as if they're going to add Ł100 to your bill

My sisters then otherhalf drove his mk1 Clio into my brothers 3DR Escort MK5b years ago. He went to a local yard that had an Escort in for breaking. He popped the hood and jumped back over the wall late at night with a headlight in hand.

Tesco also expect to lose a certain amount per year through theft. doesn't excuse it or make it right.
I have in the past though pocketed a few small bits in a scrappy but I wouldn't bother now. most bits and bobs like clips, fuses etc can be picked up on ebay for a few pence .

I've pocketed a few screws, clips and small trim in the past, but seen way more just lying in the mud. Worse is good trim etc mullered by peeps who cannot be bothered to take it off carefully to get at something, bet they lost more money that way.

Would a scrappy owner even charge for a few bolts/little brackets? Bet if you showed the part with bracket ad bolts still attached they'd probably let you take them with it.

Lighting up a bit, have you ever took a couple of bolts out of your work for use at home?

I bet doing a quick 30 minute homer at work would be seen as fraud or something by some on here lol.

No need to nick stuff. Most scrappies will give yku fuses and shite like that. Honesty pays off sometimes. Quite a few times ive gone to my local and showed him a few clips etc and hes said have them for free for being honest as most would just nick them.

not sure what your scrap / parts yards were like up your ways, but back in the day along the a13 Rainham to perfleet there were loads, and run by some very doggy blokes, wouldn't risk pinching anything, as if caught the police wouldn't be involved but an ambulance probably would be!

these days, there ain't many left, and 9/10 times you need to ask for the parts and they get them.

ps just remembering the good old days popping to them with my dad and his dad to get some old shitty cortina parts, I was left to climb about in cars without any regard for safety!

They were the good days! I remember back when I was on college our college tutor would take us to our local scrappy occasionally if we needed parts, as the tutor knew the owner of the yard they'd let us all in and wonder around freely, eyed up many a potential project, but you were only ever allowed to buy what you could fit with on the mini bus, so you couldn't buy anything large.
