new guy's project car
hi guys. my name is james and im new tho passionford. been on the mkv register for a while now so if you're on there you'll know me too.
heres a few pics of my mk5a 1.3 lx which i want to make into a 1.6 some time soon. it sits on 15" tsw wheels, has m3 mirrors, is lowered 60mm and has modest mods on the whole. all comments gratefully appreciated as im kinda new to this. rs2k front back n sides going on too. if anybody could talk me through a 1.6 cvh conversion id be thankful too. trying to justify to my parents and to myself that it is worth spending the money on this car as i dont like the mk5b bonnet or mk6 rear lights.
cheers
james

gd luck with it m8!

truth is guys the car cost me a mere 300 quid, its in brilliant condition for that money n if ntohin else will help me learn a lot about cars. i really like it too n dont wanna part with it. way i see it is i cn do so much with it for the price of a standard higher model. makes it more individual. respraying dont really bother me as im not going for complete concourse quality, just something that looks good.
looks like a solid example m8 strange thing is me m8 had a similar spec car on the same colour and he too put a 1.6 in and all the rs2000 stuff inc the wheels inc clear rear etc it looked well and went alright for what it was i'd say find a 1.6 in a scrappy some where and take the engine bay and just tell ya parents that you only live once and after you do the conversion you will have it out of ya system and you will settle down
it worked well for me as me mother bought the engine etc for me to help me out and now i fit one or two engines in me m8s cars every week
i'd say do it as you cant put a price on experience

Had this dilema when i was 17, is it worth splashing the cash? I'd be tempted to make it look cool, RS2K stuff will make it look trick, but i'd be inclined not to do the leather. I'd maybe look at what it would cost to buy some aftermarket seats as you can then take them out and put them in your next car and the money won't have been wasted, all you would need is new subframes.
Installs are great and again can be removed from the car. Its the engine side of things that is a costly exercise and will probably have more of an effect on insurance than if you were to go out and buy a 1.6. You could be quite unique and wait an year or so and then turbo charge it with an RS turbo lump or zetec. Then you'll learn a bit about turbo charging as well as fitting and removal etc.
One final bit of advice. Don't go 60mm drop unless you are buying a full kit. If you keep the standard shocks, not only will the have limited travel, but also the springs will be lose in the seats when the car is in the air. As a result it will fail the MOT.
