Best Clutch for circa 220bhp
Hi guys. Car will be going into Boost monkeys soon for another map to bring me up to circa 220bhp. Has anyone got similar power that can recommend a good clutch setup? 1900 tall block too so needs to be able to handle the extra torque.
As Karl said, I also quite like the helix range. You will also need to read about the MK5 clutch quadrant conversion for both the helix and the AP. I think the Helix is circa Ł240 from memory and the AP Ł300 (complete kit).
Rob,
Rob,
Thanks chaps. Is there any specific places to get these clutch's from? Only had a look on fleabay so far and its not producing any winners, and the one company that does supply them has terrible customer feedback so they will be avoided!
I'd rather pay a bit more to know im getting the right product. No end of people saying techniclutch have supplied them with the wrong clutch parts or shit knock off items!

Not massively cheap mind you, for over 250bhp I would buy the race/rally (60-5077) cover and use the road friction plate. They give conservative torque ratings also, I think the AP kit is rated at 200ft.lbs (from memory) and people use the -8 and -35 kits at well over 250ft.lbs. Either helix or AP will be fine for you.
My next clutch will probably be a standard ford cover with AP friction plate if I stick under 240ft.lbs for a nice light pedal... but certainly not a paddle.

Speaking from experience, I would go for AP over Helix. Me Helix was not road friendly, the pressure plate was very heavy and snappy. Had one in my escort and ended up removing it after a few hundred miles.
As for torque ratings. I know people have had no bother with theirs, but as food for thought my AP2000-8 started to slightly slip at just over 200FtLbs on the dyno.

It was a "30-4757". The lower torque rated of the two. It ended up making me hate driving the car.
I think the reason was the design of the pressure plate.
The diaphragm springs on the helix are half the length and actually have a second shorter set underneath. It had an awful lump when the clutch would engage. Driving was alright, but trying to pull away with any dignity was a real effort.

I had the same experience with one fitted to a customers car, was truly horrible! I can't remember which one it was but he was running a mostly standard engine and turbo so I'm guessing the lesser of the two also.
Thanks chaps. My car has recently had a 6 paddle clutch fitted to it, (within 300-400 miles) but hasnt had the mk5 pedal conversion so i think this may be why i have so much slip on boost.
It won't be that mate, the MK5 pedal allows more travel when you depress it for proper disengagement of AP clutches.
As yours is slipping it is either not engaged properly, contaminated with say oil, broken, or it's a cheapo ebay clutch that can't handle the torque of a hamster wheel?!
lol

Thinking back mine was a little snatchy at first however I changed to an IB5 clutch arm, mk5 pedal and quadrant and never had another problem.... Ive fitted about 6 since to various cars and haven't had the same issue, although a couple of them used the standard ford pressure plate so obviously wouldn't have had an issue.
Right! CP2000-35 coming my way! Going to have a look on the demontweeks site tonight and see if i can bundle up a load of parts ready for ford fair. Karl there will be a PM coming your way when this arrives! Is it just the MK5 pedal and quadrant that i need or is a clutch cable needed too?
