Hi all,
I'm planning on replacing the sump on my brothers 3dr Cosworth due to the sump plug threads being stripped. Whats the best and easiest way to do this? I know it's not a 2 min job but any pointers would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance.

the threads can be helicoiled with the sump in place if you are VERY carefull and have a small hoover attatchment around the drill bit etc.
Otherwise i would support the engine from the top and lower the crossmember out of the way. probably have to undo the steering column, engine mounts, arb rear mounts, possibly top mounts, and possibly the power steering pipework.

All I done was strap the engine up using ratchet straps around the strut brace to support it, if you haven't got a strut brace use some timber across the turrets,
Then unbolt the engine mounts and slacken off the cross member and you should be able to drop it enough to get the sump out, I think it is still a bit tight to do but not impossible, I think I also put a jack under the bell housing to lift it a little bit more once you release the engine from its mounts, I think that's how I done it but don't quote me on it I might of forgotten something.

if it's 2wd it's a walk in the park
as said by tosh, timber across the strut tops and ratchet strap the engine mounts to support the lump
jack it up far enough so that you can support the gearbox as well under the bellhousing
then it's a simple case of getting the intermediate shaft undone and then pulling the 2 rack bolts out to get the rack out of the way before you undo the 4 crossmember bolts (they'll be tight as fuck) and drop it out of the way
not sure if you've got to undo the brake lines like you do on the 4wd versions but that shouldn't be an issue

It is really fiddley and a pain in the ass, the most difficult part I found was getting the sump bolted back up with all the gaskets in place and sealed
Ended up doing mine 3 times for various reasons before it was sorted a few years ago.

The wonders of Loctite Gasket Positioner 534, it holds the gasked inplace and helps with sealing, I have also used it on the cam cover and not had any leaks since.
