Default My Mk1 1.6 focus

Hey guys,

I'm going to be booking my motor in for a full service etc this month as winter is upon us so want everything sorted.

I've got 2 things that i need to address and wondered if anyone's had the same issues or no what it could be.

My car is a focus 1.6 petrol on a 2003 plate.

1.) ONLY when cold within the first 5-10 minutes of driving I get what can only be described as a kangaroo effect. When I'm trying to just keep a steady speed and feather the throttle that's when it starts to bounce away down the road. This is ONLY when it's cold and once warned up its fine. when I have to wait to get out of the end of my road and the cars idling the rev counter will just bounce and rev up and down on its own a bit. This also goes away when warmed up. There's no pulling issues or misfiring going on either.

2.) I'm getting a droning/whurring noise when in nutral. This goes away when the clutch is pressed right down. Again this sounds worse when it's cold, once it's warned up its not as noticeable put still there. I had a family friend look at it as I thought it may be the clutch release bearing. He said he thinks it's more the gear box.

So any thoughts on any of these? Someone may have experienced the same issues before. The car does drive spot on apart from these with no other problems.

The kangerooing could be a lambda sensor.

Come through to darlington and I will have a look at it for you.

Hi mate, sorry I was in a rush this morning getting the kids ready for school so forgot to add that's it's had

1.) New lambda sensor as i was getting P0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold. I still get this every now and then so it obviously wasn't the Lambda. I wipe it off with a friends code reader. New Cat needed i think for that one. Not long passed is MOT so it will do for now.
2.) New plugs
3.) New ICV

i would of said ICV but thats been done.

Perhaps a new coilpack and leads. They are notorious for eating them.

and i would have to agree with your gearbox noise. My old one did the same thing until i fitted a new clutch and release bearing

Hi,

Yes the coilpacks are a pain. Not long changed my wifes plugs, leads and pack. May just replace mine as they are still the standard ones and shes on 65k now so maybe worth the change.

So would you say a gearbox issue or clutch issue? Its more annoying than anything with the noise. I just sit at traffic lights with my foot down on the clutch so stop the noise Its been like this since i got it about 4 months ago. Doesn't effect the way it drives though so i wont be pumping all my wonga into it until its needed.

i'd say clutch.

i'd say you need to decide how long you want to keep the car

I'd be tempted drop the box and put a clutch kit in it. I had the release bearing go on mine a few months after fitting a new one.
Luckily Ford replaced the part for free, it was just a pain in the arse having to take it to pieces again!

Have you got your car sorted yet? If not & you are still looking for a clutch kit, but want to keep the cost down, try these guys for cheap Ford Focus parts.

Not sorted yet but noise traced (in a fashion)

Ive been to a few garages just to enquire into the noise. Some were rally specialists and some were just normal garages. The noise is believed to actually be the gearbox. Sounds like the big barring.

After a few weeks of purchasing the car i had it at a friend to check the gearbox oil. WHY? don't know really just popped into my head. lol. He topped it up and it took quite a bit. As soon as she was running there was a leak coming from the drive shaft seal. that was replaced and no leak now.

How long it had been like this i don't know. SOOOOOO the fact the gearbox didn't have enough oil in didn't help the situation.

At this moment in time I'm not paying for a full strip down and recon so when it does get unbearable ill just get a second hand one of the bay and get it fitted.
