My mate has recently bought an XDrive30d M Sport 2009 X5 and is wondering if going to an aftermarket warranty company like warranty direct will be worth the saving over the BMW warranty or should he just stump up the cash for then piece of mind from BMW?
Seeing as there are now more BMW owners here than ford owners its the best place to ask right

Its 1200 a year to cover an e60 m5 from bumper to bumper. Take into consideration that if something simple goes like the vanos and a few other bits bmw will sting you something silly like 7k now that's 6 years worth of warranty payments covered. Bmw would want something mental like 35k for an engine so in the grand scheme of things I don't think a warranty is such a bad idea when you way it up

Maybe it's just me then that has the mentality if it breaks I'll fix it when it needs to be rather than I'll pay warranty for x amount of years just in case something goes wrong. Each to their own thoughts though.
Wouldn't bother with an aftermarket warantee. Especially as most warantees have a claim limit on items.
Warantee companies are in it to make money pure and simple. I'd love to see what small print would be used in the event of an engine claim, bet it would be up to a grand or similar.

Aftermarket warranty a are crap they won't pay main dealer labour rates and want to fit cheap crappy parts u less they are a dealer only part ! I work with warranty all day long and the main dealer ones are the best but its like everything you only get what u pay for
I totally agree but I think its car dependant. Would you risk buying a e60 m5 without a warranty when the repair bills can be thousands upon thousands of pounds?
Its not about having the cash to fix a car its about the risk and being sensible about it.
Prime example is a lad I know has an e60 m5, he didn't bother with a warranty cause he hardly uses the car so the mileage didn't warrant stumping the cash up for a warranty. He ended up with a 7k bill from bmw for vanos units and a few other bits and pieces all of which would have been covered under warranty.
On some cars its a no brainer even if you do have the cash to fix the car if things go wrong

I currently don't have any warranty on the bimmer but that's largely due to it going up for sale relatively soon otherwise I would certainly go for it.
If I owned any M car or AMG I would without a doubt have it in place.
My brothers 2 year diesel e class needed work and that was covered under warranty so certainly peace of mind.

would the vanos be covered on an aftermarket warranty?
why did it fail, if they say its worn out then nothing is covered for wear and tear etc
i've had to deal with loads of warranty companies thru work
and fro the garage point of view they are simply not worth the bother
they make you jump thry hoops to get approval, then the try to get out of paying
then they make you wait to get it inspected(to try to put you off and get sick of waiting)
then after 3 months and 100 phone calls chasing payment you might finaly get paid
i would personaly NEVER advise anybody to take on an aftermarket warranty
and as said already theres usualy a claim limit of around £1000-1500 for big jobs too
