Default A question about car direction.

O.K this may seem a little silly, but I wanted to ask you all for your opinion on modifying my ST170. Basically what has happened is I've had a couple of grand come my way, not a huge amount of money, but it's not accounted for, i.e. it doesn't have to go on daily bills or the house and although I have a couple of pounds put by towards my car mods I was just wondering in all honesty if you would actually spend a few grand on an 02 plated Focus ST.

Don't get me wrong, I love the car, and in all honesty have treated it to everything it has needed in the 8 months I have owned it. A part of this is down to the fact I work at a Ford dealership, so parts and labour are very reasonable for me

So far since owning it I've had 4 soft tires fitted, the cam-belt has been changed, a coolant leak has been fixed, the bumper washer sprayer has been changed and the list goes on (and on)..

The car is a great daily drive, and fuel costs don't bother me as my trip to work and home is 5 miles a day. If I travel any distance for work I use one of the sales cars. The insurance is only around £40 a month (42 years old) so I'm happy with that.

Now here's the thing, in the past when I have modified cars I have always had a clear direction in my mind as to where I wanted to take it i.e. track car, sleeper, something for Sunday etc.. Now with the ST170 I can't work out what I want to do with it. Ultimately I would like a little more power, 200-300bhp would be nice, but not really achievable with the same engine or £2-£3k. The other issue is at the end of the day I would just have a fast Focus.

Maybe it's just me and in my mind I can't settle my thoughts as to if I would be better off just getting a quicker car to start with, or just to make the car stop and go around corners like nothing else on this planet

The daft thing is I saved a few grand up about 6 months ago to modify it, but then when I moved house I started asking myself questions as to if it was actually worth doing.

I guess I kind of want my car to be a keeper, something to talk about with my mates, something to take to shows, something to be happy with and ultimately proud of The ST170 ticks most of these boxes, but it's not my definitive car, maybe I should just see my doctor ??

Any input would be cool

I would suggest simply obtaining a better car as OE as you will benefit from it in the long run, rather than throwing more money into a car you will see any serious return on

As above, I would take the opportunity to upgrade to a quicker car out of the box. You will never see that input on the sale so in 6 months if you decide to sell up and buy something else, you will have just lost that cash.

Would you not be heading for MK2 ST area with that cash and the sale of yours?

Sell up and get a quicker car!

Focus st (06 plate ish) then get that turned at a later date to about 300 BHP, your never look back!

One owner, FSH and not silly money! This is only one of the first ones i just saw, Sell yours or trade it in and get one! Then save a little more for tuning.
