I have an orange VR6 track car that IV got on eBay at the moment for the reason I am after a bit more power.
I was going to buy the engine out of a mk3 ibiza cupra and put it in the golf.
But for not a lot more money I have picked up the whole car.
Minus interior. Which suits me. Less for me to stip.
it's got seat sport bilstein shocks and eibach springs. 17s.
If the golf doesn't sell on eBay I may use buckets harnesses etc out of that. Then break the vr.
The ibiza has K03s turbo larger injectors. Forge recirc. Forge TIP. Remapped. It used to have a large front mount intercooler and has a printout of 252bhp but the last owner ended up putting a hole in it so put a side mount intercooler on there. Had it set up at 192bhp.

I may try and get another large front mount intercooler. How much can these engines cope with. Will only be used on track. Any known faults to watch for.

depends on miles mostly.

best off building a fresh lump to be honest, or abuse it till it goes bang!

changing the gearbox for a better ratio one makes most difference over boost upgrade

or i would advise a VR6 Turbo

 

I'm going to take it to JKM in Portsmouth. Get it set up, do a track day see what it's like. Then pull engine out strip and freshen it up ready for next year.

 

Advisable to fit uprated rods as the ones them are no stronger than the normal 8v/16v engines, you can get some for about Ł300 (Eagle, iirc) have seen them bend when around 300lb/ft torque.

Other thing that happens is the valve heads fall off, Supertech one piece valves and retainers sorts this.

Can suffer from boost/vac leaks as the rubber pipework under the inlet manifold can leak.

If still fitted with DMF can use solid flywheel from G60/mk3 16v etc and a VR6 clutch.

In the early days of the 1.8T Jabbasport had a couple of demo cars with their IHI Turbo conversions, which used a VF34? turbo with their own manifold and around 330hp, drove one of these conversions in an Ibiza and it was rapid. Think they were on standard internals back then!

One guy I know Bill Brockbank had that conversion in his Ibiza and went to the Pistonheads vMax thing at Bruntingthorpe where they have 2 cars race down the runway and timing beams. His car did about 159mph from memory and beat quite a few supercars that were there on the day. He has since built the car into a race car for Castle Combe saloon car champs and it ran a GT35 on it and around 500hp, crashed it at Combe though. He now runs a tuning company and is quite knowledgable with the 1.8T, based nr Gloucester.

I had the AUQ lump in my old Octavia vRS. Had it running a stage 1 with a few other mods, 210 ~ 225bhp.

Got 30k of mostly daily abuse and still ran sweet as a nut. Only thing with the k03s is that it runs out of poof quickly.

I'm very surprised the k03s could flow enough to make 252bhp.

As GVK said, they all suffer from the vac / breather hose failure so worth checking out!

 

Great little engines, cheap and in plentiful supply, very strong (excluding rods and valves above 300 horses, but easy and cheap to fix that), easily tuneable and tuning parts readily available off of the shelf from the usual guys in the states.

Got one in they back of the Lotus and have not looked back since moving on from YB's in the Westy.

Rebuild over winter including Rods and valves then.
What intercooler would see 225bhp

 

A friend of a friend had a little Ibiza with a fully forged bottom end and fuck me was it quick, not sure how much horses it was pushing over 350, he had a race with a new GTR, much to the owners surprise he was on his bumper the whole time, could of probably over taken him.

The 2.0 TFSI is a good engine too, out of the leon cupra/skoda RS etc, produce 240 standard, a few tweaks will see 360, then depends how far you wanna go

Fact is mate that printout is crap. Rolling road lottery the k03s will max out at 245bhp you'd need water meth to get anywhere near 250!

The standard internals its the rods that are weak they will only take 300lbft then it's just a matter of time before one comes through the block. The pistons will melt at 400bhp maybe 350. Basically all the vag 1.8t blocks are the same they all have forged cranks in just the agu and bam have large port heads.

I break them Ibiza Cupras and audi tt 225 quattros. Best bang for buck is fitting the k04 from a cupra r or tt but you need other parts aswell.

I've got a great spec cupra in breaking at the mo fitted with a k03 hybrid turbo run 262bhp.

The o2j gearbox in the cupra is the same box from the golf there are diferent ratio ones but you will never feel the difference.

My k03s was set up at badger 5 peak boost 22psi held 18psi all the way to the limiter.

 

The forge intercooler is capable (got one forsale) but new there like Ł600. The best one to go for which you will not have to change even if you go big turbo is the toyosports 300x600 there cheap as chips and that's what every vag modded is using now as it flows epic! Best to get beaded ended boost pipes or you will be pissed off with boost leaks and pipes popping off trust me.

The cooler is a nightmare to fit, you will need to shave and trim the front bumper. Or mod the crash bar move the rads back and better still get rid of the aircon.

Mint it's got brembos think I know this car! Remove the R off the front cuz it ain't one lol I've got one in breaking with neuspeed rear arb and front arb they help some much plus kw v1s forge intercooler. Also you need rear spacers if it hasn't got any to widen the rear stance it'll handle loads better.

 

Brembos and interior have been removed. I have 312mm TT front brakes to go on.
I have some 10mm rear spacers and longer wheel bolts off my Vr.
Pm me details on the cooler and ARBs

 

You'll need Audi tt hubs I think.

 

Was hoping they were the same as the vr and just need the carriers. Will see what comes with the car tomorrow. That's when it's turning up. May try and do a track day see what it's like.

 

Mine was leaving subarus focus st's (got one) type rs I didn't even waste my petrol lol kept up with an amg c63 aswell. All about the set up
