Default Tddi fuel problem - Breaking my balls

Hi all,

Have a 01 TDDI mondeo. Initially the car started cutting out after about 4 miles travelling and starting up again, idling fine but as soon as I tried to pull off it would cut, leave it for about an hour and it would go another 4 miles. Researched the shite out of it, with great help from this site and put it down to the Lift Pump. I bought a 2nd hand one - same problem. Bought a new one - same problem. Now ive just put in a new fuel filter, chopped up the old one to make sure there were no metal fillings in it - none, fingers crossed and out again - another 4 miles and cut. Gona get it on diagnostics tomorrow to see if anything is showing up, engine management light isn't on.

Any ideas - its wrecking my head.

Cheers in advance,
Liam.

How many miles has it done? What does it do when it cuts out? Starts to loose power first or just stops dead? Check the inlet manifold isn't clogged with crap from the egr. I have blanked the egr off and cleaned out the inlet on mine recently, made a big difference.

It just kinda studders(not for long) and then cuts out!
Yeah il try cleaning manifold and egv - maybe blank it off then!
Why the 4 miles tho - its nearly bang on the same each time.??
Has 218k miles also..
Cheers..

Just a little more info as I can see this is a pretty common problem with alot of different outcomes.

I got a F-Super scanner and it came up with

p0404 - EGR Control Circuit Range/Performance
p1608 - Watchdog Malfunction
p1608 - Watchdog Malfunction

Ive just cleared them and am gona see if the problem still persists.(could it be that there from before I put in new lift pump and just needed to be cleared)

With the live data..while idling,
EGRp is on 0.0
EGRd is on 74%

Can anyone elaborate on what these mean and what they should be on etc.?
Any help in general is appreciated..

Upon idle egr % should be as little as possible and if you are to put the foot to floor slowly you see the % increase to almost 100% so if urs is ready 74% chances are your egr valve is seized open

Hi I had same problem on my last Mondeo just and idea try changing the fuel pump under the rear drivers door. Mine felt as it was running but inside it is a little filter which becomes clogged hence fueling problem. So I dont know why ford did it and put the fuel filter in the engine compartment after another filter so its worth trying there 55is quid brand new off bay end easy to fit. It would explain the problem you are having and could lead to what other people may say thats causing the problem. Hope it helps u. Ps I disected my fuel pump to find that out after replacing that pump my car worked a treat

Ps I forgot to mention about the egr if it is stuck just take it off and clean it in diesel and a bit of elbow grease lol. Be careful if its the electronic version but definitely sounds as a fueling problem from the rear fuel pump

P1608 - Watchdog Malfunction

Could be High pressure pump problem (the one on the engine), or wiring to the pump, had wiring chafe going to the pump on a few old Transits in the past with same engine.

EGR won't make it cut out completely, just have a lack of power.

Have a read of this thread ref P1608 watchdog malfunction. It's for a later Transit, but worth checking out.

http://fordtransit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=39393

Wiring chafes between fuel pump and PCM (ECU) on the starter motor area.

A TDDI is a Euro3 so the EGR can be blanked with no problem -

Clean out the inlet manifold and fit a solid EGR blanking plate - don't waste your time messing about with the EGR valve - you don't need it and the engine will run better without it (and more reliably)
