Default FAO Folks who know Golf GTi's!!

Well it now looks like if I don't get an Escort or Mondy I may well go back to the Golf GTi. I can get either a mk2 8v or a Mk3 8v, but am nbot sure which to go for.

It seems everyone says the mk3 is crap, very heavy and slow and shitty handling, but on the upside it is a newer car and can be made to look very nice. But the insurance will hit me harder and I don't know if I would be better off going mk2?

It's also a nice looking car with a bit of work and the engine seems to be more tunable for reasonable money from what I've picked up on various forums.

Which way do I go?

Cheers as always folks

hi ive owned gtis in all forms from 1977 new and used .the mk2 gti is going to be difficult to obtain in good condition now due to steadily increasing prices 16v 3drs are stupid money .i have a mk3 2.0ltre gti that im using to run around in and to be honest is imo a much better car allround than the mk2.tailgates rust badly and all cars after 1992 are fully galvanised.easy to make look nice with a slight suspension drop and 17s transforms the car more so than mk1s and 2s

art411y, cheers for the advice mate. So you reckon I am better going mk3? I found out the later models have better suspension etc so would look for one of those. If I could pick up a half decent one for around £500 I'd be over the moon to be honest.

I do like the mk2 a lot but as I said before, the mk3 is the newer car. Shame I can't get a 16v but so far I got quoted £1643 TPFT by Liverpool Vic on an 8v.

Worth trying HIC and Flux?

www.clubgti.com

but not www.club-gti.org

Mk3's are good cars generally. Theres lots about so take your time to buy a nice 3dr one with FVWSH. Colours worth having are Burgundy, Green, Dark blue and Black IMO

Jay, If it's a temporary car, Mk2 every time. The 8v's are still a good car, you can get one for very good money, and probably not lose much. They're fun, pretty quick, and pretty cheap to own.

The Mk3's are lardy, not fun to drive, but do hold their money relatively well, just not my cup of tea.

If it counts any, a Mk2 GTi will trounce a Mk3 any day of the week.
