Default No cotter pin or locking nut on rear wheel bearings

Hi All,

I have noticed that on my 93 Escort there are no cotter pins (or holes for them) nor do they have locking nuts for rear the hub nuts. This strikes me as a little odd. Is this standard on all fords? The threads are directional, ie the left side undoes clockwise and vice versa - I guess this ensures that the nut will always "try" to spin in the direction of the wheel, therefore meaning it wont come loose? I havent had an issue with them but I'm more curious than worried as it just seems odd!

Any one got any theories on this
Cheers
