Hi guys, been reading the forums more and more lately, been in the Ford scene for 6 or so years, owned 2 puma's, a mk5 zetec s, Escort RS turbo and a Focus diesel.

my current fleet is my trusty Focus diesel..which is now on 203k and my pride and joy which is my Puma track car.

so thought id post a thread up to keep updated.


Brief history, owned the car 4 years, pretty much wrote it off after 6 months (driving like and arse) but now its a dedicated track car. This isnt a big power car but its aim is to be as cheap to run and maintain as possible and to deliver the maximum from what i have.

Saw this with its little feature in Fast Ford or Performance Ford magazine, 1 of the 2 anyway. Looks ace. And my god that caliper is a tight squeeze!! Will be following this!

Yeh I know I posted it but it wasn't in this section so just thought I stick a new thread in the proper place.

Won't be doing the Bedford trackday, my first one next year is rockingham march 31st

 

Update... Car is flat! Damn race battery doesn't do too well in the cold weather, my fault really as I didn't take it off and pop it on my trickle charger! Oh well!

Job for this week at some point then is to get the battery out which is under the passenger seat and bolted down, it's never simple with a modified car is it.

Might look into some form of insulation for the battery, some kind of blanket to wrap it in just to protect abit more.

Oh and I've also got a lotus exige carbon fibre rear spoiler blade them I'm trying to work out how to fit.

 

UPDATE.... well not much of an update but...

spent a couple of hours doing a few jobs on the car


tidied the calipers up abit with a re paint




polished the back box with some Kleers metal polish - cant recommend this stuff highly enough!!

also ordered a rear half cage today, Custom cages CL2, should arrive in 15 days or so, also added a harness bar to the order, so lots to be getting on with, need to get a major service kit ordered next

 

Finally managed to give the car a proper good clean a week or so ago, been wanting to do it for about the past 6 weeks or so now but just havent had the time.

But!! Finally today i managed to get it done.

then last weekend i spent most of the day down the garage with a few mates working on various days cars, including my own and managed to get a couple of jobs done.

Removed the pipes and rad from the aircon system, still need to get the pump and matrix out but i need the P/S pump from a non air con fiesta first.

the pile of cack removed, doesnt weigh much but every little counts.



then i got the oil cooler mounted better and plumbed in, only one pic of that as i forgot to take more, fits nicely with the P/S cooler with the air con rad gone

Future plans... enjoy it and do as many track days in it as i can afford to do.

Got a rear half cage being deliverd next week from custom cages so i'l be getting that welded in as soon as it arrives, also plan on stripping the interior again in the process so i can paint it matt black with an orange cage.

Ive got loads of other bits and bobs that i need to do and fit, oil pressure guage,
battery isolater switch, mainly parts ive bought but never bothered to fit, do before i buy anything else i plan on fitting all the parts of got laying about in the shed.

 

looks good mate, im planning on removing my aircon too at some point, how come you need to fit a different PAS pump?

im hoping to be at the track day on the 31st too, mine is pretty much std at the mo (ebc pads, filter and T1Rs) so itll be interesting to see how much quicker yours is. im trying to resist the temptation to go fully stripped and as light as possible at the minute as its my daily, but i fear i may not be able to resist the urge after this track day

 

As regards to the PAS pump, when you remove the air con pump the belt needs re-routing, the only way to allow this is fit a PAS pump from a non aircon model as it relocates it to where the air con pump was, and then the PAS pump becomes replaced with a tensioner, plus is a lighter unit that the one thats on my car

little update... did my forst track day of 2013 at rockingham on easter sunday, good track, would recomend it people, the banking is a great element that other tracks cant offer!

Fair play thats a really neat looking car. I didnt think ST170 discs would fit under a 15inch wheel. Do you still use the standard puma caliper?

Nope it's a mondeo/jag x type caliper.

Tidy that. My mums just bought a puma i was shocked when i picked it up they do go well and are so cheap!!!

 

they were a lucky ebay find, got them for 35 quid!

yeh i had many a long night working on this down at QCS, shame he let the business go, i missed having my own personal mechanic!! oh well!!

this one is from my helmet, braking for the hairpin my mate in his clio tries to come down the inside, his brakes are no where near as good as mine and i knew he wouldnt make the corner... still gets very close though!!

cant really say yet, i havent driven the car in anger for a little while now but it did feel pretty good on the drive home, i think the next job is to free my coilovers off so i can drop the front a little bit more, the understeer seeems to build up too quick, id prefer abit more grip.... new stickier tyres will also help when i get round to buying some more wheels.

 

Was that Clio a 182? If so fair play for staying with him!

yeh there were quite a few 182's out on that day.


^^ on the way in im on the brakes, i aim to get slowed down turned in then put the power down as im apexing the corner and starting to take the lock off

from watching some of the guys go round i was pretty smooth and quick, didnt have many people get passed me all day....

... then again, its very easy to get the red mist on track and just to start over driving which i am like many guilty of.

Adjustable wishbones are on my shopping list, think im gonna send mine off to have rose jointed adjustable ball joints fitted.

 

Car looks awesome. I was looking at a puma the other day and tempted to get one and strip it out for some track fun

 

The red mist is fun although a lap of sliding round every corner will usually see you black flagged

 

they are great fun, this is my second one, through work ive driven so many different cars, evo's, impreza, lambo's, ferrari's etc and nothing puts a smile on my face quite like it, theres just something about small light and cheap front wheel drive cars, there just so chuckable and no matter how bad it goes wrong theres always hope you can get it back!

ive had oppotunities to buy bigger and better cars but ive always stood by my puma.

 

errr yeh.... we got a telling of a donington for that!

 

i didnt last time i was on the track and the reason i was sliding around because i had a blow out on the rear left wheel but didnt notice any thing wrong because i had a stock rear end where to front was stiff so a very boncey rear ended anyway lol.
