Default Quaife atb

I'm thinking of buying the above for my 7" sierra diff but these aren't cheep to buy, are they really that much better than the standard one? To warrant the price.

Can anyone give me a first hand heads up on these as I've read all the stuff on the quaife website and it all sounds good.

Any advice would be welcome before I slash out.

Cheers andy...

Thanks guys, I'm gonna use the car for fast road / track day and the odd santa pod blast its about 360bhp and only weighs about 800kgs would a gripper be over the top for what I want?.
I've heard they are a little noisy too.

Cheers andy

If you like spinning the inside wheel out of corners and filling the track with smoke but not actually going anywhere then Quaife ATB is fine pmsl

I would normally say gripper but IMO in a mini I wouldn't want 1, too short a wheelbase a quaife would try to keep it straight instead of trying do do circles.

That's intresting, to be honest the standard one isn't to bad, I'm not looking to change it because I keep breaking it I just find its a bit harsh when it does let go which it does faily often.
I was hoping it might deliver the power smoother and not be so harsh when it does go.

The thing I want to know is are they really that much better than the standard one, after all they are about £800,

Cheers andy...

The gripper is like a welded diff on power, but off power it will go around bends without skipping.

A quaife never locks up so what it does it distributes power to the wheel with the most grip so you might feel a slight sway as you go on power but it you won't get full on lockup and wheelspin.

Why not try a pumped up vc? IMO uprated diffs are better and make a big improvement but it depends on application.

Whats your car handle like sideways?

Cheers for the info mate, the mini is pretty planted in the corners to be honest, when the back has tried to come round I've just steered into it and corects its failly predictable.

I was expecting it to be all or nothing because of the short wheel base, that's why I'm not to keen on messing about with it to much.

What do they do to uprate the standard diff?

They put a thicker viscosity fluid in the diff unit as far as I am aware.

If its like that I wouldn't change it for a gripper if it was mine, don't get me wrong it's fun but when you come off a roundabout and plant it and the boost comes in it can be a bit of a handful

plated diffs are more aggressive for sure, but require closer maintainence periods due to it being a friction/mechanical system where plates have to step up ramps to allow to spin etc.

i have had viscous diffs but these tend to cause torque steer over the ATB's, but they have their own issues if a wheel lifts.

I was told I won't brake the diff! But the crown wheel and pinion is another story lol best you can do is have it shot peened and super finished and don't drive like a twat all the time!

Thanks for all the info people, I think I'm heading towards a pumped up vc it seems to be the best choice when cost and application is considerd. Imo.

The gripper has noise issues and is expensive and a little overkill for my little car.

The quaife is expensive and no very good on the whole, from what I've read.

I just have to work out how much to pump it up now, car weight / power / use of the car, etc.

Bara and cts seem to be the companys to speak to, if anyone knows of some other company let me know.

Cheers andy...

i wouldn't totally dismiss the atb, very good unit in fwd format, i bet it's not shite in rwd format either.
the only issue is if a wheel lifts, then drive is lost, but when launching it will move the power around to aid grip.

Totaly agree with you there mate, but with such a small wheel base car and a very rigid shell like mine fast track cornering is more likely to lift a wheel.

To expensive also.
