Cylinder head - short side radius exhaust
Hi,
matched the manifold to cylinder head ports on the S2 and was wondering if I shall do
some porting on the exhaust side as it looks awful especially the short side radius.
Does it make sence to do some porting on the exhaust side?

if your confident that you can keep the same shape and not go mad ie enlarging the ports then go for it. i would call it a tidy u rather than orting as imo porting involves gas flow testing and is a secialist arena. tidying up rough castings/matching is a cheap way to improve the ve to a degree. get it wrong though and your head will become an expensive paperweight. DONT polist the inlet side. instead use a stone burr with squirts of wd40 to give a nice finish. polished surfaces do nothing for gas flow on the inlet side. atmomising the charge is more important. i have always beleived olished surfaces helf reduce carbon on the exhaust side though aswell as aid ridding the spent gasses.
Have a read here https://passionford.com/forum/ford-e...y-started.html plenty of pics of professionally worked heads too!
I wouldn't open up the exit of the exhaust port personally but matching and flowing the inlets is well wor while getting rid of the sharp areas in the port.
Also as you say if you can sort the nasty short radius on the exhaust port that's also worth while

Looking back I regret opening up the exhaust port so much, although it was only opened mostly at the port mouth to match to exhaust manifold. Good improvements can definitely be made around the short side radius, and other areas around the back of the valve.
Also on the next head will have un-trimmed bronze valve guides on the exhaust side which will cope with high egt's a little better, the stock guides trimmed on the inlet do just fine.

The exhaust port size is already too big as cast. Making them larger is certainly not an improvement.
You are correct that smoothing out the sharp edge on the short side radius is well worth it.
Again don't go too far - just get rid of the sharp edge - do not lay back the edge too far.
Some shops remove so much material from the short side radius and get into the valve seat - weakening the seat. There is no point going that far.
Cheers
