Default Selling a car I've just SORN'd

Hi guys,

I've sorn'd my car a few days ago and now need to sell it.

How does the buyer tax it? Does the buyer need the v5 to re-tax? I wanted to send the v5 off to DVLA myself (with the new owner section filled in) just to make sure everything is done properly so is there any way around that?

Also, DVLA says you can't re-tax within 21 days of declaring SORN, does that mean I can't sell yet and have to wait 21 days?

thanks for any help!

SORN only applies to current owner, if it's sold whilst SORN'ed then new owner will either need to re-Sorn or tax the vehicle. It can be taxed at a Post Office using the new keepers supplement. Just send off the V5 like you would normally do to inform DVLA of change of keeper.

I've not heard of this 21 day law before, where did you read that?

Thanks for that. Does that mean if the buyer comes to pick up the vehicle on a day when the post office is closed (bank holidays), they can drive it to their house then perhaps tax online? Or is that completely illegal?

The 21 days thing I read when I sorn'd it online. It said that if you want a tax refund you can't tax for 21 days. But I'm assuming if you change the owner that no longer applies? I've already sent off the form for a tax refund

Thanks so much for all of your help

Buyer drives home with new keeper supplement, taxes vehicle at local Post Office next available day with new keepers supplement plus MOT & Insurance certificate. He won't be able to do it online as he won't be registered keeper on the system. There's no reason why he has to wait 21 days to tax it, even if you've applied for a refund.

Legally the new keeper would have to trailer the car home if the post office is shut. They could be charged with failing to display a current tax disc. Buying the car on a sunday or after the po is shut isnt a valid reason.
