Hi everyone

I have a bit of an issue regarding towing a car. We have a track car an tween 4 of us and we agreed between us that we would to the car to the track via a tow rope or bar. However it has since become clear to me that as the car has no tax or insurance this will be deemed illegal.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Thanks chaps I thought so. In that case can anyone reccomend an insurance company that likely to be cheap as the car is only like to do 1k a year if that. It's a pug 405 mi16v completely stripped with a roll cage. It's only to get to the track and back.

 

How about getting a trailer and putting it on that?

There are some very lightweight trailers as low as 350 kgs unladen for cars to be put on and towed even on a B licence if all the weights work out ok

unladen/kerb 1300
GVW 1850
Towing 1500

Trailer
Unladen 350
MAM 1300 (must not be more than Mondeo unladen weight)

Car being loaded 950 actual weight

Mondeo GVW and trailer MAM when added together must not add up to more than 3500 - 3150 in this case

All legal for a B only licence holder

Even with the car fully road legal I don't think you can legally tow long distances using a rope (which would be a pain in the arse to do) or bar. I think the law only view them as emergancy measures to get broken down vehicles off the road.

As said get a trailer and tow it. If the wheels touch the road it needs to be taxed, MOTd and insured

 

Get a lightweight trailer and tow it as ROG said.

Plus if you have any mishaps on track you don't have to worry about towing it home.

 

dont know what they charge near you, but here i can hire a twin axle with manual winch for Ł32 incl vat for one day, more for weekend hire, ie 2/3 day
or if youve got the room and the money buy one for Ł750+

 

An update on this for you guys we are getting a towbar fitted to the van and using a trailer to get it there and back. Thanks for,all the advice.

 

You can tow on a B only licence under strict rules

What it does need to be though, is in a condition that is "safe to be on the road" and if the "trailed" mass is over 750Kg it needs to be "braked" !

 

I'm pretty sure this is wrong, it is not a trailer if all four wheels are on the ground and someone is sitting in it steering....

Whilst there was no mention of "someone sitting in it steering" I appreciate what you are saying my scenario is whilst using a chariot or dolly (both illegal if total towed weight is over 750Kg and is not braked) so when towed the car becomes a trailer and does not require its own MOT, Road Tax or Insurance as these are all the responsibility of the driver of the towing vehicle

 

i was just driving about yesterday when i spotted a 99 discovery towing a twin axle transporter with another similar discovery on the back, some how it didnt look right, as the back end of the towing vehicle looked too low, maybe the trailer was over the weight limit,
i was under the impression that you cant or shouldn't carry/transport the same type of vehicle as you are towing with

 

your gonna need a b+e licence to pull a trailor with a car on it, unless they both together weigh under 750 kgs and a metro weighs about 750kgs on its own

 

Perfectly legal.
Discovery can pull 3.5 tonnes.
Disco weighs around 2 tonnes leaving 1.5 tonnes for the trailer.

All 4 x 4's have a high towing weight limit.

Wrong. Read up about towing laws before handing out false information. There are plenty of good threads on here.

So what your saying is you can pull a vehicle via a 'A' frame and its legal without mot or tax?

if its is then thats completely wrong.
