Default Rs turbo escort head gasket problem?????? Help!!!!!

Its for a mate. His head gasket went on his Rst escort. After 3 attempts and closer investigation it appears his 1.6 block has liners!!!!
So the question is. Is they a special gasket for a lined block?? And has anyone heard of 1.6 cvh blocks being lined before???

Here's a link to his origanal post on the Rsoc.

Any help advice is appreciated. He's pulling his hair out.

Dave

seems obvious to me, the block nees to be 100% flat, if the 'liners' protrude a normal hg wont work, maybe a cut about std one with the protrusions wirerung

if it were me??

get another block and give the rest a miss

Odd that...did you say the block got removed and stripped to be re-decked?

have you tried to 'chap' the liners down as they may have moved from there seat when turning engine over with no head on? (shouldn't but it's possible...) i've also saw liners lift from there seat during a hot wash when at machine shop!

i think it needs a multi steel gasket to sit over the liners rather than on top of them

What is the liner protrusion above block height?

If they are completely flush then just use a std Ford headgasket, or if they are proud/recessed you can surface grind the block face to achieve a flat face.

I would recommend removing and stripping the block to a bare block and surface grind the face until you achieve a totally flat face and then use a genuine Ford gasket.

Assuming all liners are at 12 thou it will seal the combustion gases fine with a new headgasket fitted, but won't provide sufficient clamp of the gasket around the oil/water ways, probably resulting in water leaking out the sides of the gasket.

Hi,

You can't use wiring ringing with a Ford ERST headgasket because it is essentially a steel laminate head gasket, its just the upper and lower layers are fibre and rubber coated rather than the traditional MLS type black steel gaskets, but the fire rings are completely steel and thus cannot cope with the extra compression provided with wire ringing.

If you wish to keep the wire ringing use a genuine Ford XR3i head gasket with new wire rings set to 6 thou protrusion, otherwise surface grind the block with the wire rings still installed to get a flat block face and use a Ford ERST gasket.
