Default Car insurance for 17 yr old (I know it's boring).Sorry!!!

Ok my boys 17 in October.I've been trying a few dummy quotes on comparison websites and I'm getting nowhere, best I got on a 1.3 ka was £3500!!!and that was with a £1300 excess, which I didn't ask for plus they only valued the car at guess what?£1300!!!good luck finding one like I've got for that price.

Anyway,I've seen a few tips on here with named drivers etc but this makes no real difference from what I've seen.

What I'd like is some feedback from 17yr olds on here who are currently insuring cars or parents who've done the same.I'm told the Ka is a bad choice for insurance cos it's considered a bit boy racerish (hmmmm) so I'd certainly consider other makes/models.
I'm expecting £2000 odd realistically as anything more than that's just silly.
He's not crazy to get a car surprisingly so I'm wondering if waiting til he's 18 would help?he'll still do his test at 17 but perhaps wait a bit til he gets on the road on his own.
I know it's a boring subject but I could do with some help as I've had trade insurance for 10 years so I'm well out of touch with it all!!!

My neighbours have just had this and they bought the car by the cheapest insurance and they ended up with a sciento for their daughter.

You buy the car and insure it and put him down as a named driver. Aslong as you use the car abit theres no harm done!

£3500 is just stupid how do insurance companys expect people to pay that, it will probaly cause more accidents with kids driving cheap as chips cars that are possible death traps

unfortunately there is no cheap way, my lad is 17 and passed his test last september,
the cheapest we could get at the time was £3100 on a 1.0 lupo worth about 1200 quid ,
and that was with me and the misses on it as named drivers ,
they are even whacking the price up if you buy and insure it with him as a named driver , they call it fronting , it's a bit of a grey area really as they cant really prove who is actually the main driver.
come this september when he has 1 years no claims we are going to try admirals multi car policy for all our cars ,which will hopefully be cheaper for him but still allow him to collect his own no claims

insurance companys try and price young drivers off the road tbh,,

have you tried an insurance quote with a pass plus added? thats ment to bring the quote right down, and you might be better off looking for specialist insurance comanys that deal with young drivers, adrian flux is quite good, but still be preppard to shell out over £1200 for a 1.0l!

Might be worth thinking outside the box a little when it comes to car choice. All the traditional small cars - Ka, Fiesta, 106, Saxo, Corsa, Clio etc etc tend to be driven by first-time drivers, and tend to have a lot of crashes (as far as the insurance companies are concerned - whether it's true or not is a debate for another day).

My first car when I was 18 was £1100 3rd party for a 2.0i Saff GLS - although I concede that was 9 years ago and things have changed. Plus being the opposite gender helps too in these matters.

I also heard once from someone who worked in the insurance industry that they tended to give cheaper quotes for teenagers who rang up the company themselves rather than getting their parents to do it for them - sounds like a load of crap to me, but may be worth him doing as much of the legwork as possible, on the off chance.

Hope you can get something sorted for him.

It's a damn nightmare for youngsters. A friends brother is 18 and pays over 3k to insure a 1.2 Corsa C.

I've said it many times before. You need to think outside the box, what cars young people DON'T want to drive, Skoda's/Kia etc etc.

apart from being illegal as it's called fronting. I had insurance in my name, then put my low risk dad on as a named driver, bought it down loads. My first car was a J plate 1.6 rover 216 gsi, was cheaper than most small cars to insure, and went like the clappers too!

Buy the car off your son, log book in your name and you insure it him as named driver and both drive it, simple!

Why is it illegal if you both use the car?

If you did this and then your son/daughter ONLY used it then yes i see your point but if your sharing the car then...

my daughter got a policy with endsleigh last year when she passed her test and it was £800 for a 1.2 corsa.this was a student policy though.she now has a 1.4 polo and her first renewal went up £250 with a years no claims bonus.
would hate to be 17 now and all you want to do is get out on the road-its ridiculous!

have you thought about those black box gadgets that monitor speed and the time of day the car is used.im sure the insurance goes down if the car is driven properly and in "normal" hours.

only legal if vaughant is the MAIN driver. These days with insurance investigations being common, especially on high risk drivers, he WILL get caught in a claim. In his case its pretty obvious as he works away in jockland and his kid lives elsewhere

Get caught and both of you will be fucked for insurance for ever.

I think with the prices shown id rather take a chance as who can pay 3.5k for a car that can cost less then £800.
Or just don't bother with insurance and take a chance! See who moans then! Whatever choice you choose your still f*cked!

It's insurance fraud, technical name is "Insurance Fronting" I know Hertfordshire police are seizing several cars a week for this offence.

See if you still consider it worth a punt if you're caught and botg end up paying 4k to insure anything? Insure it properly or don't bloody drive

Try getting him a MK1 Fiesta as it seems you can get these insured for about £1500/£1800

Might be worth having a look at the pictures or resto thread section and asking some of the young lads who they are insured with.

will be more than that for the 17 year old once hes done for insurance fraud

Thats if anyone will qoute the young lad.

people forget that they ask if youve "ever" had insurance cancelled/refused or revoked. so you will be fucked for life. Sure your premiums wont be sky high for ever but a lot of insurers wont cover you out of principal even after many years, thus limiting your choice and hence chance of getting a good deal.

Be prepared for it to double when he passes his test. your aswell getting a quote as he has just passed his test to give you an idea of what to expect in the future. They say learners are less likely to crash than newly passed.

and think of the joy, young woman will soon be ripped off equally as much the feminists didnt see that one coming did they??

insurers must be rubbing thier hands with glee at the equality ruling knowing they can charge woman more for a lower risk and just pocket the profits

try a corsa 1.0 12v, it does help if you can put an actual reg. number in on the comparison websites too,
i know 17yr olds paying just over £1k for ka's and corsa's etc without doing anything dodgy

Would you know who their insured with?I'll pay up to 2k as I know the drill with insurance,to think I was insuring a Cossie at 20/21 for £423 fully comp is scary but times change admittedly.

Thanks for the relies chaps but to clear up these are all quotes as if he's been diving a few months and car in his name etc and it's a real car that's currently being used by his gran.

I won't be fronting etc as it's beneficial to get your own ncb ASAP,that's how I was insuring the Cossie at 21 with 4 years ncb at that price,in fact I've never paid over £600 on any car (apart from trade insurance).

So maybe a 1.0 lupo or polo maybe the way to go.

Fucking kids!!!

another idea is you could buy a new car from a dealers on finance and you get free insurance / tax servicing etc for the first couple of years, expensive maybe but least you wont have to worry about cost of the car going wrong etc

Im 18 and doing my test in a couple of weeks after having some money come through, best quotes ive found are around £1400 on a 1.3 mk3 escort. Mk1/2 fiesta are around £200 cheaper, but that £1400 if paid monthly comes in at something like £1750, but i think the best thing to do now is that insure the box site, car has to be newer that 1998 i think, my mate just passed was around £1000 on an aygo though.. I do think thinking outside the box helps though, not something that youngsters would have crashed over and over will help no end.

you are effectively uninsured then.

If youre lucky, they will pay out third party costs then pursue you for the debt......

Also if you get pulled over there is a good chance your insurance company will be rung and youll be done for no insurance.

its a risk you have to take, not choose it.

my part time job is out of town so is my college. the price of public transport is the same as running the motor.

been pulled several times/ police spoken to me in car parks and looked at it then never questioned it with it all been ford stamped.

no its not a "risk you take". its that attitude that will get you in trouble.

If you cant afford to insure a car with mods, then you drive a standard shitter, end of.

its nothing to do with being young.. its about being in experienced what they don't understand is inexperienced 25year old has the same chances of crashing racing etc as the 17 year old.. your insurance at 18 will still be as high as it is at 17 if you don't have no NCB.

Ive spent ages looking at quotes and what ive found is cars like Corsa 12v, Citroen AX, Saxo 1.1, 106's Micras are (for me) all around £2500+ mark.

For me on a Rover SD1 V8 Vitesse, as an 18 year old with 1 years no claims Fully comp £500 excess

Was just £1200 with eCar. See the differnce? I tried again on a 1.8 Saff worth £600 that again was 1300.

Then I did a Nova SR 1.4 that was £900

A corsa 12valve for me is £2800

All the cars that people expect you to get are hit hardest, I even did a BMW 520i that was about £1600!

Its more the popularity of the car and especially were you live, lucky for me I live in the middle of nowhere, compared to my mate who lives by a main road his prices are nearly £1000 more than mine!
