No, because they don't test them in real life conditions, it's all done in a test lab with no resistance and at lower speeds.

Think the goverment are supossed to be on at the manufactors to change it, but it will still be wrong.

Put a good driver behind the wheel who looks at the road ahead and are light on the brakes ect they are.

I get around 50mpg out of my 58 plate 2L diesel passat.
The highest I ever got it was 61.7mpg on a motorway run.

Nonsense, used to live with a fella who worked for Roush when they were developing the Sport Ka, he had it for about 2 months road testing it to calibrate the ECU maps and get fuel efficiency figures.

I saw the same add and the mrs and I both looked at each other stunned. But looking around, the VW passat has been getting that mpg for a couple of years at least now.

I was going by what I had read about http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/...so-optimistic/

But I agree with what you said but I don't belive all manufactors are doing it the same.

I got a genuine 66.4mpg out of a chipped Mondeo st diesel on a motorway run over 120miles, was being very good but it was up and down slight hills so very impressive considering. New cars are only getting better

Anyone see the episode of fifth gear with the kia ( i think ) thats sposed to do 88mpg

Where 3 of them drove it, tiff cained it and was avaraging something like 19 mpg, another drove normally and was getting 40ish, and the other drove like miss daisy, along with alot of coasting and managed 40ish too!

well i have a 06 tdci 130 mondeo and i literally drive it like i stole it and still returning nearly 40mpg so not a big leap to think the new version is even better..
if you move into 1.6 tdci focus 05 ish they will give well over 50 near 60 with reasonable driving style

Quite possibly, but as I understand it all cars have to do some sort of road testing to get everything correct, particularly ECU's. And yes, probably testing is done by someone who knows exactly to get the best out of the mpg and is on a mission to do so, in which case, average joe driving is probably quite different.

Economical driving is a real fine art. Basically, it's trying to avoid using the brakes at all times an keep the car in motion as mich as possible.

If you use the brakes your bleeding off energy that you have put into accelerating, so that's wasted. You use more fuel accelerating the car from a stop than if you kept it moving.

Driving economically requires a lot of effort, almost as much as fast driving as you have to plan loads ahead.

I have been tryin to be as economical when driving recently and managed to get from what was 280 miles to a tank of petrol usually to 330!

It is doable, but requires a hell of a lot of effort!

I jumped in a new fiesta econetic today with just 957 miles on the clock, majority of this has been done in town driving. Average mpg on the dash display was 60mpg.

So thats 60mpg on an engine not even done enough miles to be ran in in just town driving. Which makes you wonder, on the motorway on a car with a few thousand miles under its belt 66mpg seems perfectly reasonable.

my fiesta does about 48mpg thats worked out by filling it up and running it back down then filling it up again , dosent get better on the motorway by that much as its dying for a 6th gear. Not sure wear some people get some of these figures from i dont think ide trust a digital mpg gauge that much tbf.

so you've read an article that clearly states that they use a rolling road, but still say it's done without any resistance?

the figures gained on the road will not be accurate enough to quote for any useful purpose.

as the linked article above states, they have to be done in a climatic test cell with a rolling road (with a representative combined wind and road resistance) with very accurate fuel consumption measurement equipment from the likes of AVL. trust me, i've been there and done that.

Took my missus 57 plate Clio diesel away last year and the average was into the 60's when we got back. And that even included me driving it
