Default Im sorry but its getting stupid....

Insurance! Im 17 (i know thats the reason) BUT STILL! £5000 to insure a 1300 KA is absolutely pathetic! Ive got up to about £2000 to spend on a decent car to last me until im at least 21 then i can upgrade engine size etc But how the hell am i going to do it on a apprentice wage with insurance prices like that! Ive tried older cars, newer cars, grandad cars, hairdressers cars, you name it and still crazy money! The only car i have had a good quote for is a Mini but its finiding one that isnt rotten You can understand why people dont bother with insurance!! What a Joke!! Sorry about the rant! Can anyone help me? lol

My friends brother is having the same problem. He's 17, just bought himself a 1.1 corsa which he has been learning in. The car is kept on a gated driveway in the village which is in the middle of nowhere and the cheapest quote he could get was around £3000.

I think the two main factors at that age are location and occupation.

It is getting ridiculous though. My insurer last year bumped up my insurance by £400 for no reason at all. The only thing that had changed was I had earned another years no claims!?

its none of these mate, it used to be. Its now down to people making stupid 'compo' claims which have made insurance so stupid. was on BBC news a few months ago

Good shout!

I used to just trawl the internet to get a quote. It pays to actually bit the bullet and sit on the phone for a few hours.

I ended up speaking to a top bloke at "need2insure" who asked about the car etc, what clubs im a member of, how long have I owned the car, what have I done to it. He came to the conclusion that im an enthusiast (rather than some boy racer whos just picked up an rs turbo) and did me a really good deal.

my son went through this in 2010 when he turned 17 and gave up, he did his CBT and now rides a brand new 125 fully comp for £600, then he tried agian when he turned 18 in 2011, same price so guess what hes still on his bike, I can fully understand there is a risk with younger male drivers but to price them off the road is pathetic, to pay £3000+ on a car thats worth say £500 is a joke

I was curious so i put the amount i payed for my first insurance in to an inflation calculator and... in 1996 Ford Orion 1600 Ghia cost me £950 TPFT todays money £1434.50 so their seems to be a massive increase.

Speak to Paul at www.need2insure.co.uk 01623 720081 he is a specialist and insures hundreds of RS's on this site and many others - i know your looking for run of the mill car but he does that too so ask him whats best he will give the answers you need - you don't have to ring call centres you'll get straight through

Chris

Way back in 1999 At 17 My first years insurance on my d Reg Orion 1600 ghia was £1650.00. That was with my dad on the policy.
2nd year was £1200.
3rd year upgraded to a mk3 k Reg 1800i ghia. That was £1000.

If you really wanna drive you'll find the money one way or another. You need to get the experience on the road for it to come down.
I understand the prices are extreme but they always have been.
Just keep shopping around.

Insurance is pathetic. Abit sick of it myself.
Been driving almost 2 years and on my 3rd Policy.

First year...
Peugeot 406 1.9TD 90bhp with a stage one tune declared (~130bhp) and audio equiptment and I paid £1200
Insurance group 11!

Second year...
Ford Focus 1.6 LX with audio equiptment declared and I paid £1400
Insurance group 6

Just started a new policy cause I have a new car...
Peugeot 406 Rapier 2.0 HDi 90bhp, with audio (pretty much same spec as my 406 just a newer model) £2,600
Insurance group 10!

2 years driving, 3 policies and I'm still getting nowhere fast with getting my insurance price down.

I don't get how driving a big granded barge like a 406 that does 0-60 in 14.5s and 105mph is more expensove to insure than a focus which does 0-60 in 10s and 120mph.

I think insurance companies are on acid!

Back in 2009 when I was looking for insurance I could insure a Vauxhall Omega MV6 3.2 V6 for £1700 as I was actually considering it!

Bit different to insuring my 3 door way back in 93 for £720 as a 20 year old

Best bit was that it was insured as a mini cab so I could have put an ariel on the back and a walkietalkie inside "breaker breaker, this is the bandit come in 10/40" or whatever they used to say

Same but only been driving 11 years, my insurance went up by about £100 this year, despite having 9 years no claims and now pay more for my insurance on my 1999 1.8 5 door focus than I do for my 800cc Honda on a BRAND NEW motorbike license, first bike etc... Go figure :-/ (Both policies are fully comp)

It is the potential damage a new inexperienced driver can do with a car and has very little to do with the car's value (within reason)

I don't get it, my first car was a 1.3L four door Mk4 escort. Cost me £800 to insure in my first year. That was 11 years ago.

Now, looking to buy a 350Z, never made any claims, been drivin for 11 years, 30 years old now and the best I can find is a policy for £1500 with a £3000 excess

It's just stupid.

ive tried adding named drivers, I put my mum on the Ka yesterday, it was £189 for her fully comp and then £4900 for me Its one kick in the bollocks, im not blowing my own trumpet here but theres young lads and lasses out there like me,who leave school and try there hardest in getting into a job so they can buy what theyve always wanted, they get the money to buy a car and then this just stops them altogether, its wrong, its alright people saying well your just going to have to pay it but when you ask them if they would, they change there tune then....

Try a MK1 Fiesta as some people seem to be getting quotes of £1400 ish on those,or even a kit car as they seem to be cheaper to insure than main stream cars too (sometime)

Had the same when i was 17. It was cheaper to buy a brand new mk4 fiesta that came with 3 years free insurance than it was to buy an old car and pay the insurance

In simple terms, insurers just dont want to insure young men anymore. end of really.

no it wont make it cheaper.

now the premiums are high, they will stay high unless the government forces the companies to price fairly.

If people stop claiming compo, it just means the insurance companies will pocket more profit at our expense.

black box insurance seems to be the way to go for young drivers you have the device installed in the car and they monitor your driving this means no speeding you also have a 11pm curfew

You say that but its the insurance companies etc that keep sending you the texts saying "you can claim for the accident you had recently" when you have never even had a fooking accident

Begs the question why you are allowed to get a license at 17 then really as who is going to be able to afford £5k insurance?

It's all shit for young drivers now ,if there going to charge 3k for a year then at the end of the year they should give the customer/driver 2k back then they will of covered them selfs incase of a crash and if not then the young lad/las gets a nice wedge back then every body would be alittle happier ( just a little mind lol). But that won't happen cause there as greedy as fuck just like our government

do you have family that live fairly near to you but in a more upmarket area that you could possibly use their address on the quiet?

also a young guy at work found that adding his girlfriend to the policy reduced the cost a couple of grand,
he is 20, 1st time insurance with loads of convictions or various kinds

dunno if mentioned, but have you car listed "as parked on main road" and not "on the drive" as apparantly this bumps up the premium because the robbing cunts will just rob your house to get keys. if its on the road there is less chance apparantly! something an insurer told me!

i had 9 points on my license at one point, and didnt even bother declare them!

another thing i think which should be brought into touch is, i think u should: apply for a pro license at 17 but not be able to take a test untill your 18 to gain experiance on the road!!!
