Default Focus 1.8 to 2.0 engine conversion! HELP.

hi guys, im new to this site so please can someone give me some assistance on my latest progress...

I bought a donor car (Cougar 2.0 Zetec) and i have my Ford focus mk1 1.8..

i took the engine out of the 2.0 and bolted my 1.8 gearbox, flywheel, clutch etc to it. and have it fitted with 2.0 injectors etc etc.

BASICALLY the car starts and runs, but sounds like its misfiring... it wont run like a normal car... it has the 1.8 ECU in...

NOW HERES MY PROBLEM. the 2.0 cougar ecu doesnt fit into my 1.8 loom. does anybody have any suggestions of making this conversion complete?

im guessing ill either need the 1.8 ecu remapping... or some sort of mod to make the 2.0 ecu plug in? any ideas? PLEASE HELP

cheers!!

id say a 2.0 ecu from a focus, and maybe the engine loom too if it differs from the 1.8

i did think that... a 2.0 ecu from a focus.. that should plug straight into the 1.8 loom as far as i know?

and wouldnt i need key chip and iginition barrel? or would it work with my key and barrel?

making it just an ecu plug in?

hmm, so you think a FOCUS 2.0 ecu and key chip would do the trick? bearing in mind its a COUGAR engine? but it is a zetec blacktop... same as the 1.8 that came out of mine...

ive done quite alot to it... just trying to get it all to run before i do even more and tidy it all up

do you think having the 1.8 ecu plugged in is why the engine sounds like its misfiring?

cheers pal

The problem is that you have 2.0 injectors and your ECU is working on the basis that it has 1.8 injectors fitted, it's over-fuelling because of this.

You don't need to change the ECU.

Yes you do hotdog. The engine is built for a 2.0 map. Your theory is the same as saying a 1.1l map would run a 1.6 perfectly. Which it wouldnt

This conversion has been done before loads of times using the 1.8 ECU and injectors. They are virtually identical engines except for the capacity, only the fuelling needs adjusting.

The MAF sensor is perfectly capable of recognising the increased air flow and telling the ECU to compensate for it, it will then increase the fuel flow. At the moment it's recognising an increased air flow and compensating by increasing the fuel...The trouble is that it's working on the basis of 1.8 injectors when it has 2.0 injectors fitted...It's running rich, trust me on this, I've seen this problem before.

BTW, this might not be the only problem but it is a problem. With all else being well your car will run perfectly on 1.8 injectors.

This does not sound right to me, it makes sense what your saying re the injectors but it doesn't sound right you should run a 2L engine on 1800 injectors, I am sure if Ford could have saved money by doing this then they would have done so!

It also makes sense whats being said about the mapping, the ECU is not that smart to just increase the fueling when there is extra airflow, well it does but only by a slight amount.

As with any computer it can only do what it's been told to do, so if anything changes drastically it will need remapping, it may well work but it doesn't mean it's working properly.

That's the point, nothing has changed drastically.

Nearly all injectors will run 25% more power than standard. How many cars do you know where the first thing you have to do when tuning is upgrade the injectors? The increase in capacity is about 11% so the injectors are well capable of handling it. I know that people have run in excess of 150bhp with standard injectors so I think the sub 130bhp expected isn't going to be a problem.

The thing is that I know for a fact this works, I've seen exactly the same problem before and it was solved by fitting 1.8 injectors.

I know this is an old thread Guy's but on reading it will the 2.0 still have the 130+ bhp when running 1.8 ECU. Oh Focuswilliam did you ever get it sorted?
